Get Outta My Dreams. Get Into My… What?

Posted by Dominic Holden on Mon, Feb 9, 2009 at 5:14 PM

State senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-36) introduced a bill this morning that, if passed, would expand the rules for impounding vehicles used to pick up a prostitute. The existing law is too narrow, apparently, as it applies only to “vehicles” and “motor vehicles.” Senate Bill 5934 would replace those words with “conveyance,” a term that generally applies to aircraft, boats, and other forms of transportation. When asked about the impetus for the bill, a staffer for Kohl-Welles office said the bill is designed to broaden the language to include bicycles and boats.

The law would only apply in designated high-prostitution areas, marked with signs. How many of those areas include waterways could not be immediately confirmed. Nor could the number of Johns who pick up prostitutes using one of these:

Fiscal meltdown - finally dems have some control - real problems abound

And newly minted granny Puritan climbs out of hiding - she is such a case

Rumor Domenic, she feeds you the scoop all the time, thus, you cannot mock this with all your mocking skills .... sad, cause this beats Pam Roach all to hell

Silly, silly, silly. AND for the record many moms will be whoring a little on the side in a recesssion to feed the kids - throw them in jail?

She needs a good opponent, really, really. Domenic, does she smoke a lot of pot? Rumor.

Just recanted my opposition, we all know the retired judge, 78, and the 16 year old both need to forefit cars - that will teach them to never to seek pro sex ...

Hey Dominic - does this sound familiar?

Reporters for daily newspapers make a moral virtue of getting "both sides of the story" in the service of objectivity. So where was the other side of the pot-bust story? Where were the answers to the obvious questions: How much did the raids cost? Do the defendants (or the organizations that speak for them) have anything to say about them? Are armed raids on private residences the best way to apprehend lawbreakers?

I'd like to suggest a couple of changes:

Reporters for daily newspapers make a moral virtue of getting "both sides of the story" in the service of objectivity. So where was the other side of the foie gras story? Where were the answers to the obvious questions: Is foie gras really humanely produced? Do the defendants (or the organizations that speak against foie gras) have anything to say about it? Should they really be quoting foie gras producers and Anthony Bourdain as proof of humane production?

Oh, but I guess the Stranger isn't a "daily paper", so Bethany Jean Clement is absolved, rather than being named (drumroll, please)....

Stupid Fucking Credulous Hack

For the record, nobody expects Chittim to run a marijuana legalization advocacy piece—only that he (and other MSM reporters) stop reciting the same bullshit scare lines that originate from the White House. Until then, he’s a stupid fucking credulous hack.

Oh, I couldn't resist...

For the record, nobody expects Clement to run a foie gras ban advocacy piece—only that she (and other Stranger reporters) stop reciting the same bullshit lines that originate from Anthony Bourdain and foie gras producers. Until then, she’s a stupid fucking credulous hack.

See how that works? It's easy!

@12, no, I'm not the Iraq war troll. And this is a short-term gig, a day at most, just demanding better reporting from my local paper - hey, just like Dan and Dom and ECB do!

I take it back, SFCH guy (or gal) @13. You have convinced me with your polite discourse. Though I am an omnivore, I agree that her article was surprisingly one-sided.

If you're working this in three months, I'm going to feel like a pathetic sucker.

I want to see someone get caught with a prostitute on a bus, then see them try to impound it.

Because I, as the prime sponsor of this bill, did not get a chance to speak with Dominic, I would like to clarify the intent of the bill. The legislation, requested by local governments, creates a new authority for local governments to require customers of prostitution to pay for the damage they do to the prostitutes and sets in place a funding mechanism for providing services to persons who are often trapped into a life of degradation and violence. The bill creates a procedure to impound all methods of transportation used by customers who are either in a designated high prostitution area or who already have a conviction for prostitution-related offenses. Local governments don’t have this authority to target these items now and the bill gives it to them and the ability to fund the needed services. Calling the method of transportation a ‘conveyance’ or a ‘vehicle’ is irrelevant to that point. The intent of the act is clear from reading it. Which I hope readers of the Blog will take the time to do. The bill number is Senate Bill 5934 and you can read it here http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.….

To the Stranger: Just so all of you know, you could not have been more inaccurate in reporting this. It's designed to allow vehicles to be impounded upon arrest -- it targets the "johns" who victimize what are often under-aged prostitutes being used by out-of-state groups. Sen. Kohl-Welles' bill is a good one -- you may wish to take more time to find out about it before filing your next report. And next time you call the Senator's office, you may wish to ask them to put you in touch with staff that has worked extensively on this.
