Too Many Comics: Sulk

bdd0/1233970820-71a964be12e3e9de479cc41f6abf1d8f.image.109x150.jpgEvery couple of months, I like to do a Funny Book Review Revue in the book section. This week's book section wasn't big enough for all the comics we've gotten in the last month or so, though, and so I'm going to review the excess here on Slog.

7d6b/1233971134-sulkftwocov_lg.jpgI'm at the end of my rope with Jeffrey Brown. He's either doing autobiographical comics or he's doing lame superhero parodies that Shannon Wheeler did better ten years ago. Sulk appears to be a regular series by Brown. Each one is about ten bucks.

Issue # 1 is more superhero parodies starring Brown's annoying character, Bighead. You should read his earlier book, Bighead, if you're interested in this sort of thing. But there's no reason for him to explore this "character" any further.

I should like Issue # 2 more than I do, because it's a change of pace for Brown. Instead of writing about himself—even Bighead is kind of autobiography—Brown writes about an Ultimate Fighting Championship match. For 80 pages. I didn't think he'd do anything more dull than he's already done, but I was wrong. Perhaps if you're into mixed martial arts or UFC or any of those other things, you'll enjoy this comic; I sure as fuck didn't.

Ouch. I do agree that Jeffrey Brown seems to have trouble finding things to write about that are of interest to people other than himself. Or maybe that's his intent? Either way, I'm mystified as to what people see in his work. Have you read/attempted to read his book Any Easy Intimacy? SNOOZE.

I'm a huge JB fan, but I was a bit mystified by Sulk #2. It almost seemed like he just wanted to an opportunity to choreograph a lengthy two-person fight scene. It wasn't super interesting. The Incredible Change-Bots wasn't totally up my alley, but at least it had some great laughs and ideas in it.

mattymatt, how can you find Any Easy Intimacy snooze inducing?! I'm assuming you liked Clumsy and Unlikely?

Wow, I just read Paul's rant from May 2008. I didn't think I could read anything worse than his review of Wendy and Lucy, but I just did!

i hate jeffrey brown so much! why is he famous? his drawings are ugly and wobbly and bad, he can't stop writing about how he has the same painful relationship over and over again with different girls. in said relationship, he comes across as kind of a passive aggressive misogynist whiner dude. there are so many lady comics artists who do the same sort of shtick better than him, i wish liz prince or julia wertz would get some of his fame. but comics are a misogynist game, lolz.
