Several readings tonight.

At Open Books, Andrew Joron and Andrew Zawacki read poetry. Joron has written a book called The Sound Mirror. Zawacki's new collection is Petals of Zero Petals of One. I regret to inform you that I haven't read either poet. You can read a poem by Zawacki here. You can find a poem by Joron here.

At Elliott Bay Book Company, Jim Shultz reads from Dignity and Defiance, a book about how Shultz is trying to stop corporations from sucking all the life out of Bolivia's natural resources.

At Adams Elementary School, Julia Alvarez reads from her new book Return to Sender. She is the author of the very good In the Name of Salome. Alvarez is an American author who was raised in the Dominican Republic, and she's got a great perspective on both worlds. She's written a ton of books from young adult novels to non-fiction and poetry and if you think you might be interested in this reading, you should totally go. She's lovely in person, too.

And in the University District, three authors read tonight. Bainbridge-based author Jonathan Evison, author of All About Lulu, will be reading something new tonight for the first time. Kathleen Rooney will read from Live Nude Girl: My Life as an Object. This is a book about her work as an artist's model, and also about the history of artists models. Which is a pretty fascinating subject that doesn't get much attention. Well, I mean, besides visual attention, that is. I haven't read Kyle Minor before, but there's a big, slobbery blurb from Donald Ray Pollock on Minor's website, which is, to me, a recommendation to read the book. Minor and Rooney are on a tour of the country—I think 25 stops—and at each stop, they're teaming up with a local author. This is a good way to go about readings for young authors, I think, and that makes this the reading of the night.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.
