Notes from the Prayer Warrior

Posted by on Fri, Feb 6, 2009 at 8:35 AM

I never heard back from the Prayer Warrior, Ken Hutcherson, when I inquired about his health after receiving two e-mails (here and here) that suggested he has cancer. But last night he told KOMO 4 News the story: he has prostate cancer.

"I was diagnosed in 2002 with prostate cancer," Hutcherson, looking tired and a bit rundown, said Thursday while sitting in his new Redmond office.

The pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Kirkland leads a congregation of 3,000 members. But Hutcherson came to prominence for his vocal and public battle against gay rights and gay marriage.

"I haven't felt good for seven years, but I try not to let that effect how I treat others and how I live," Hutcherson said. "I think that's why most people didn't think there was anything wrong with me."

Many in Hutcherson's own church don't know he's living with cancer, and he doesn't talk about it much.

"I can either look at it as oh woes me, or I can say thank God that I am worthy to go through this to be molded to be more like Jesus Christ and to know that he's kept me here for a reason."

The reason, Hutcherson believes, is to continue preaching against gay marriage. It's a fight that has gained him many enemies.

"I think there's a lot of people hoping I die," he said. "That may be one of the reasons God's keeping me around."

Oh really?

As a verifiable lefty-loosy agnostic, I do not hope Ken dies. In fact I am sorry to hear about his illness and hope he does well against it. The ability to separate the man and the crusade is what distinguishes the thinkers from the Christbullies.

or, god gave you prostate cancer because you spend your time stoking hatred?

God's keeping him around so he can bash on gays? What a fucking asshole. Hutch, too.

Sorry, Hutch, there are plenty more people who are indifferent to whether or not you die.

One of them is God.

You know what have helped detect it? A prostate exam. I was listening to an A-squared station here in Chicago yesterday and they were talking to someone who had prostate cancer. It came across that no black guy wants to get the exam because it would involve getting a finger up the old butthole. A lot of people are so hung up on as being perceived as OMG GAY! that they won't even have a basic, possibly life saving, non-invasive procedure done. I would bet ol' Hutch is one of these.

It seems to me that Hutcherson is, at least a little bit, good for the gay rights struggle since he's so obviously loony. Better him getting publicity than someone who at least comes across as somewhat rational. Same thing with Anne Coulter. Perhaps this is why leftists are so obsessed with her.

He's wrong, I don't want him to die. I want him to SUFFER for a long time. And then die. If that happens maybe I will believe there is a god.

KUMO needs a new copy editor. "Affect" is a verb, "effect" is a noun. And the traditional phrase is "Woe is me" not "woes me."

@9 Wow, that would make a lot of sense. I mean, this is the same guy who said that if a man opened a door for him he'd tear the guy's arm off and "beat him with the wet end". Does that sound like the kind of man who would let a doctor put a finger in his butt for a prostate exam? I think not.

This really made my day! Of course when Pastor Retch gets teh cancer it is god trying to form him into a more Christlike figure, but if a gay guy gets cancer/AIDS it is a punishment from god for their evil ways. I may never get the comfort of having this d-bag break his cognitive dissonance, but it brings a certain smile to my face thinking of the maggots eating his eyes. And yes this is my liberal intolerance at work.

"It came across that no black guy wants to get the exam because it would involve getting a finger up the old butthole."

So much wrong with this statement. No Black guys? None? And is it just black guys, while white guys love getting fingers up their butts?

I don't want him to die either, I just want him to shut the fuck up and go away. Of course, if he did happen to die, that would be a bonus.

We all die sooner or later.

In Hutch's case, I don't mind if it's sooner.

Mmmmmuuusst. Ressssiiist. Sssssschadenfreude.

No, Pastor, I don't want you dead. I want you, as death approaches, to take a long hard look at all you have said and done, at how it hurt people, and have your own Gethsemane reappraisal of your hate-filled legacy, and use what time you have left to make up for it.

plot arc of a 17th century allegorical morality tale set in the early 21st century. But this is a great source of never-ending ironies.... Perfect material for juicy satire. Get well Rev

umm... isn't prostate cancer not extremely life threatening? They usually don't even operate on it because it's not likely to kill you. Otherwise, it's snip snip no more erections.

God's not keeping him around; God's just killing him slowly.

Amazing how the tortured logic works. If a 'bad' person gets sick it's punishment from God, but if HE get's sick it's some kind of twisted gift from God so he can be more 'Christ like'.

It hard not to have a little schadenfreude over the fact that any treatment for PC is going to involve something going UP the butt at some point. Poor Hutch. Poor doctors.

I wish he would die a little faster; though slow and painful is probably better for him. I mean you know he wished that on gay men who died of AIDS.

What @23 said. Sure, it's "cancer," but it's hardly enough to really slow you down. I had a huge, horrible malignant tumor in my body and didn't notice it for years, so Hutch's BS about feeling bad seems silly to me.

oh and...

"I haven't felt good for seven years, but I try not to let that effect how I treat others and how I live,"

- Indeed. You've admirably continued to treat people like shit and live like a complete asshole.

"I think that's why most people didn't think there was anything wrong with me."

- Trust me. There's PLENTY of people who've thought there's LOTS wrong with you for quite some time now.

I'd much rather the pastor come to his senses before he dies....that way we'd all win!

Alas what will probably happen is that when he does die, he will die as a hate-filled bigot (with a sanction from god)

@23,

I think it has a good prognosis if it's caught early. However, if others' speculation is correct, that Hutch resisted getting a prostate exam, it might have been caught late enough to cause more serious problems.

Or, there are a lot of people hoping he dies and that's why god set him up with a slow and painful way of getting there.

Anyone else find it funny that he's got cancer in his prostate when he's been so concerned about what everyone else does with theirs for all these years?

When he didn't show up and testify in Olympia yesterday, I figured something serious was up. It's not like Hutch to miss an opportunity to stand in the spotlight and bash gays. (And curious, now I think of it, that none of his colleagues that did testify mentioned him.)

Now is your chance, Hutch, to take a fresh look at your life and repent the sins of hatred and bigotry.

This is worthy of Dante's Inferno. Talk about the punishment fitting the crime: a disease of the private parts for a man who made a career of persecuting a group of people whose private lives he disapproves of.

@23 and 27, @30 has it right when he says "if caught early" but it has to be very early. It is common practice to remove it, which often causes impotence. If advanced, radiation and chemo may be needed. People still die of it all the time.

If he is now impotent and has been, perhaps for the last 7 years, it would explain a lot.
