Dept. of Clarifications

Posted by on Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Bacon is (still, always) good. Calling it "SO OVER" in this post was meant to make fun of the fact that it was ever "in." Food trends are dumb, though they do sometimes bring neglected-but-delicious foods into more stores and onto more menus (hello, Brussels sprouts!).

The $3.50 martini at Von's is nowhere near the best martini in town; it is not even good. Calling its gin "Christ-punchingly bad" and the comparison to gasoline in last week's Bar Exam was meant to illustrate this.

As you were.

Tip: If you have to come explain it on Slog, you're being too ironic.

@4- you should try a sprouts dish other than "Your mom's brussel sprouts w/ no spices, and 1 grain of salt in the boiled water."

Does anyone know any good local food blogs for progressives or other conscious people who don't want to support the #1 cause of human-related global warming, the #1 cause of preventable health problems, and the #1 cause of animal abuse?

Bacon is not good. It is totally over.
What other sclerotic, coronary-inducing food creates --as an industry by-product-- giant fetid pools of pig waste which then seeps and contaminates the groundwater?

We need a carbon impact study on which is worse for global warming - smoked bacon grilled on an open wood fire, smoked bacon fried up in a pan heated by hydropowered electricity, or bacon microwaved using power from nuclear fission - and then compare it to a good martini.

Now, does it matter if the bacon is local from King County on an organic farm, or if it's trucked here from Florida?

How can something so mouthwatering delicious be so mindnumbingly evil?

But it is.

sigh...

The real problem is that bacon has become so fetishized. You just can't enjoy a nice simple fry-up without someone wanting to involve a lot of complicated nonsense.
Maybe it is time to let bacon have a break.

I like my bacon without frills. Just piles of bacon. More crunchy than soggy. But piles of bacon for sure.

No one doubts the power of bacon -- but the real question is...which bacon?

I only buy the thick fresh bacon in the deli (like at Top Food). I buy just enough for me (1/4 or 1/2 pound). It's worth it and I would never by the stringy salty bacon in the plastic shrink wrap.

BJC: I didn't know about the bacon infused brussels sprouts at Smith, but when you mentioned them yesterday, I had to try them. I went there last night. Oh my fucking god. Oh. My. Fucking. God.

While I do love Brussels sprouts, I really believe that it's all about the tots right now.

Additionally, "Christ-punchingly bad"? That's awesome. Fucking awesome. I'm stealing that.

I just want bacon to go back where it belongs - on my breakfast plate, next to the eggs and hash browns.
