Bike vs. Van in Ballard

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 9:29 AM

Seattle Police have shut down the intersection at 24th and 65th in Ballard after a serious bicycle/van collision.

According to Slogtipper Ric, a cyclist "was pinned under the van."

Seattle Police could not provide details on the cyclists' injuries, but SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson says the department's traffic collision unit was called to the scene. "They usually come out for serious accidents," Jamieson says.

More details as they become available.

Cue virulent anti-car post from ECB exploiting this horrible event for the sake of her anti-car vendetta in 3...2...1...

I hope that cyclist was wearing a helmet, and hope they're OK.

I hope everyone is OK, as well, but I am surprised not to see a post from ECB blaming the driver yet (you know, before there's any evidence either way).

I sure hope that wasn't my boss, he's late and he usually cycles out of Ballard.

Better call Cascade with their ambulance to come pick him up!

Seaiously: There but for the grace of god (and some armored downhill MTB gloves to pound on that that pratt electric van which almost right hooked me out of a bike lane this morning) go I.

Obviously, we need to ban bike helmets, since they didn't stop the injury ...

Until I saw the photo I was wondering if might have been the Google streetview van.

@9, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope for your boss's sake that it's just a coincidence. But really, I just hope whoever it is is okay.

how dare he ride his bike without a Cascade bicycle club support vehicle nearby?

WHAT WAS HE THINKING?

I'd be happy if my boss got hit by a van.

Wasn't him, but I'm always hearing about the close calls he's had biking in Ballard (and on Westlake Ave). Hope it's not just a matter of time...

The biker was a racer for the Alki-Rubicon team. He was an experienced cyclist.

This is horrible. I was hit by a car several months ago commuting to work and this news hits me hard. Drivers, please watch out. And cyclists, always eyes up and hands on the controls when you're approaching and going through intersections.
