The Morning News

Posted by Eli Sanders on Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 8:55 AM

Does anyone in government pay taxes? The nominee for chief White House performance officer withdraws because of... tax trouble.

Change of heart: Obama's new pick for Commerce Secretary once voted to kill the Commerce Department.

Target of populist rage: The somewhat less glamorous life of a Wall Street worker.

A bad winter: Almost 30 percent of Seattle homes sold at a loss in the last months of 2008.

Ballots due today: In an all-mail election that we help you figure out here. Vote!

One less journalism prize? The P-I bows out of the Jefferson Awards.

Cadillac man: Before his chauffeured ride got him in tax trouble, Tom Daschle drove this rusty Pontiac around D.C.—and bragged about it in a campaign commercial:

Wow Obama! That was change we can believe in. How about VETTING your nominees?!?!?!?

Fuck, at this rate I am going to agree with Nader and say there really is no difference between the two parties.

The best thing about that Daschle commercial is the name of the PAC that sponsored it: "A lot of people supporting Tom Daschle Committee"

Oh, and his bragging about his car belching out clouds of exhaust. Simpler times.

A good winter: more than 90 percent of Seattle homes sold at a profit in the last months of 2008.

You would think that--by now, at least--there would be some sort of standardized questionnaire for potential candidates that includes tax issues.

So, taxes...you know if we don't check into these, the right- or left-wing watchdogs will, right?
a) I pay them on time, always. I'm anal-retentive like that. Not worried.
b) I usually pay most of them. But it costs money to pay taxes! And I only make $XXX,XXX (or $X,XXX,XXX) a year! I would rather risk the audit.
c) I pay some of it, but conveniently leave out "domestic" help. I mean, I don't have to pay taxes for illegals, right? Right???
d) Taxes? Ha. I have an account in the Caymans with more than enough to afford an accountant and an attorney.

Did you actually read the Times' real estate article, Eli? That 30% number is for Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma. The Seattle-only number is 19%.

What in the fuck is Obama's problem? Jesus H. Motherfucking Christ, the list gets longer every day.

And I guess we can no longer say that it's only the Republicans pulling this kind of sleazy shit. Yowzers.
