GDrive

Posted by on Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 5:55 PM

6bb4/1233357552-old_computer.jpgThis could be the year that Google unveils the GDrive, the online hard drive that would enable you to basically use your home computer from anywhere.

A watchful blogger has discovered a change in one of the files included in the Google Pack which offers a description of the service.

In the aforementioned javascript file ( which you can read here ), the Google crew offers two key insights about the enigmatic GDrive:

* GDrive will provide reliable online backup and storage of your files, including photos, music, and documents.
* Files will be accessible anywhere by using your desktop, a web browser, or a cell phone.

I know there are plenty of online hard drives already. I'm just a Google whore.

wouldn't be your home computer - it would be your data accessible from anywhere. funny they used to have the same sort of system when computing started, it was a mainframe with dumb terminals, not personal computing but the same idea, central storage.

Yeah, like I'm going to agree to a EULA that puts all my personal data where it's accessible to the NSA/DHS/ATF and agree not to hold Google liable if they lose it or it's somehow misused.

You other Slog readers are smarter than that, too, right?

So that Google can have and scan ALL of my data? Not just my browsing history, my personal communications, etc etc????

Wise up, people. Seriously, what are you thinking?

Those former N.S.A. boys who cooked up Google appreciate the free commercial, Paul.

Total Information Awareness is much easier when everyone's data is outside their home and in one convenient place...

If I could keep my music collection backed up on it, I'd go for it just for that. I'm scared of fire or something destroying my hard drive.

@4: You are hilarious.

@7: Mesh requires software download.

This will be pretty great when it launches.

Too bad Comcast will permanently cut off your internet service if you transfer too much data in a month. Copying one smallish hard drive would put you over the limit (250 gb) and Comcast is nice enough to NOT warn you when you're getting close to the limit.

/And they're spies!
