The Morning News

Posted by on Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 7:53 AM

Dressed For Success: The Obama White House goes casual, sounds like a lot of fun.

War Is Hell: Army reports record number of suicides.

Mayhem In Mexico: Ongoing gang wars could put Mexico on the brink of "rapid and sudden collapse."

Mayoral Malfeasance: Mississippi mayor indicted on fraud charges for Hurricane Katrina aid requests.

Size Matters: Feds want 12-lane bridge over Columbia River.

Now Put a Swear Jar In Gregoire's Office and Our Money Problems Will Be Solved: State Senate passes bill to cut $105 million in expenses.

The Postman Only Rings Twice (A Week): Mail delivery could be cut due to massive financial losses.

The Digital Age Cannot Be Stopped: DTV delay nixed; old people not ready.

Bruce Springsteen is playing the Super Bowl halftime show this weekend. It will be nothing less than epic. I only pray there are no wardrobe malfunctions.

First the coat comes off.
Then the tie will come off.
Then we'll see him wearing baggy shorts, t-shirt, and a baseball cap backwards.
Then he'll order chicken wings and Old English malt liquor to be brought in.
Then he'll start playing hip hop in the Oval Office.
Oh, gawd, how I miss 'W already!

And Wall Street gave itself 18.4 billion dollars in year-end bonuses. Thanks to W and his buddy Hank Paulson, we will probably never know how much of that was paid out of the bailout money they received from, well, us.

Sickening what they get away with.

Also, @1 what the hell is wrong with you? Do you have to be such an ass so early in the day?

GW screamed at a guy for wearing khakis and a button-down? On a Saturday morning? That might make me hate him as much as anything else he's done.

Oh no! I don't have a digital TV and I've already taken a huge advance on my social security check to buy old-people medicine (and oxycontin for my granddaughter). How will I watch Sit & Be Fit and the NewsHour now? Oh dearie me.

I don't like casual. Reminds me of guys with man boobs in knit shirts on golf courses in Arizona. As for Raindrop, African American culture has many strands, but one is a strong tradition of dressing up and dressing precisely. "Casual White House" is more like some "casual Fridays" crap that culminates in a big night out at, well, TGIFridays.

next time Rush Limbaugh needs " comedic material" shoot him your resume. You are a goldmine stale jokes and stereo types that many conservatives find sooooooo funny. Believe me you need a life and comedy writers make good money.

Ah, the Post Office - higher prices, shittier service. I swear to God they must be taking lessons from Comcast.

The only people who can pay to send snail mail anymore are the junk mailers. I still get plenty of that! But all my bills come by email, all my personal correspondence comes by email. The only interesting postal mail I get are parcel deliveries and Christmas cards. Maybe we could eliminate paper mail altogether, except in Nov-Dec, and go to a parcel-only service.

Don't worry about The Boss's wardrobe, Jonah. Worry instead about the ethnicity malfunction that millions of Stupid Bowl viewers will witness on Sunday. Here's what'll happen: Bruce will start playing "Born To Run," then suddenly transfigure himself into Gil Scott-Heron circa 1973, and perform "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" in its entirety. On national TV. With all the rabble watching.

If I were you, I'd worry instead about what'll happen when all those confused Stupid Bowl fans put down their cans of Coors Light and turn off their TV sets.

Wouldn't that be something?

Jeff, enjoy a glass of Lillet for me during the Puppy Bowl.

"I’ve got to do something about these plates. I’m not really a plates kind of guy." I don't know why that made me laugh so much... Is it really a bad thing to have such a normal guy in the White House? Seriously, are we really worried about "dressing down" or are we just concerned about getting things done? If good things are being accomplished, then I don't care if they're all meeting in their underwear! This is - like the whole DTV thing - a non-issue.

Dressing down means suit coats not necessary in the oval office and business casual on the weekend. They're not running around in shorts and t-shirts, people.

Also:
Meetings started early — the former president once locked Secretary of State Colin L. Powell out of the Cabinet Room when Mr. Powell showed up a few minutes late

That's great. Love to hear that our Secretary of State was prevented from attending a Cabinet meeting.

This article from the NYT ought to make Erica's head explode:

@13 I read that yesterday. It should make everyone's head explode.

@1 - At first, I couldn't tell whether we were talking about the Obama White House or a possible Springsteen wardrobe malfunction. :)

OK, I was crass and over the top. But I believe that reverence for the Oval Office should require a coat and tie at all times, even on weekends.

@16: So when you're elected president, you can do just that. Until then, how about letting the grownups conduct business the best way they know how.

Raindrop

Yea you were just being crass. You couldn't think of another way to get what you said across(16). Yup, resorting to tired racial stereotypes was the only way.

You call it over the top and crass...and i call it being a racist asshole.

@16,

That sure explains why W's vice president went to the Auschwitz anniversary looking like shit. Reverence, my ass.

I bet you won't see Obama in anything resembling those idiotic get-ups Bush wore outside of the White House. He certainly won't be caught dead wearing Bush's flight suit codpiece.

@12,

It just goes to show that concern for outward propriety and punctuality != competence or intelligence.

Wow! What can't the FEDS propose a 12 Lane Bridge between Seattle and Bellevue?

Now THERES something to believe in!

That Bruce vid is too funny. But seriously, you gotta respect The Boss. His music may not be your cup of tea, but he's a class act.

@18: Racist! Stereotyping black Hip Hop-lovin' jocks, yes. But, that's not racist.
Obama WAS wearing a backwards baseball cap in Hawaii playging golf... << shudder >>
