Police Stepping Up Patrols In the U District Following Weekend Robberies

Posted by on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 6:01 PM

The University of Washington has sent out an email alert to students after two men were assaulted near the University District over the weekend.

According to the UW email, around midnight on January 24, two men in their mid-20s attacked and robbed another man near NE 45th Street and 9th Ave NE. The UW notice says the men hit the victim in the face and stole his wallet.

Two nights later, another man was assaulted in the 5200 block of 17th Ave NE after he refused to let two other men use his cellphone. Police say the suspects stole the man's backpack and fled in a burgundy PT Cruiser.

The UW notice does not indicate whether the two incidents are related.

The university says additional police officers from the Seattle Police Department and UWPD are being shifted to patrol the U-District.

That German war buff used to scare them off, but now they just run amok.

Man, I can barely walk 2 blocks without seeing a cop in the U-District. I can't believe their presence is already so ineffective.

PT Cruisers are gangsta.

Cops are rarely seen on the side streets, which are impossible to avoid if you live on one. I've stopped carrying cash because of the surge in violence in the past few years.

Yay violence! Criminals are good! Law and order is bad! "the billionaire's obsession with the maintenance of the law and order in the city that generated and stores his fortune. These laws not only protect his fortune but also block others from accumulating that kind of wealth. And, as we all know, any fortune of the size enjoyed by Wayne has raw robbery (dispossession, as David Harvey would put it) as its founding moment. In the last instance, Batman, the defender of the law, really defends his own money. That was my impression of the madman/superhero of this endless movie. As for the Joker, what other choice did he have but to be outrageously nihilistic? Only an evil person who is indifferent to money can sustain and strengthen the moral line that is instantly troubled and weakened when a proper robber, thief, crook is matched with the ultimate defender of the laws that protect and reinforce Wayne's wealth. Writes Herbert Marcus: "The ruling class, in order to justify its dominating position in the process of production, has to make the particular interest of its class seem valid as the general interest." "

oopsie, wiat! Now the criminals are attacking us -- delete -- repeat the new mantra:

crime is bad now! law and order good!

After getting these things for a couple years now, the rule has become pretty clear: Never, for any reason, go walking on 17th between 45th and 52nd at night. 90% of these things happen on the 1700 block...which you would think might be some sort of helpful pattern the police could use...

Also @7, thats cute and all, but please don't use Charles Mudede as a representative for Stranger readers or 'PC liberals'. Mudede is just insane.

I get these emails and the interesting thing is that they are always describing man-on-man crime! Even the only sexual crime I can recall was man on man. What's up with that, and what's up with fucking PT Cruisers???

And this is just the stuff that was in the papers. I still find it weird that I personally witnessed two men assault two other men outside Flowers, but none of the news outlets mentioned anything about it.

Concealed - weapons - permit. Cheap and easy.

A couple weekends ago I came out of Varsity theater and saw a brawl over a botched drug deal (which included a dog attacking someone), a guy being hauled into a cop car completely unrelated, the windows busted at Aladdin's, and then a pack of Juggalos trying to goad me into a fight for no reason. All within about 3 blocks, great place.

Agreed - the U-district has a crime problem. I suspect that the crime problem is partly because the retail environment on the Ave is so terrible. Anything other than a bar, head shop, or used clothing store is going to open in the U-Village. Where retail caters to young people making shopping mistakes, young people will make other mistakes. As goes, shops so goes society.

WTF #13? Kids buy hip clothes and cigarettes and it makes them start robbing people in PT Cruisers? The Ave has great restaurants, interesting shops, and businesses that aren't in every strip mall in America, unlike University Village.

whats funny is that ave rats dont hang out in front of urban outfitters, buffalo exchange, university bookstore, or any of the other big retail establishments. they hang out in front of run-down or vacant businesses. so, actually, if there was a better retail environment, there would be less asshole-ery.

AF@13, that makes no sense whatsoever. Yeah, those soccer moms who shop at Banana Republic and Kiehl's are totally mugging the patrons coming out of Williams-Sonoma. Also, there are no head shops or used clothing stores in U Village.

The University District has always been a shady area. I can't count how many times I've seen fights break out in and around the Ave, or hear about someone getting mugged. There are already so many cops around; why hasn't that prevented all this from happening? Hmmm...

Puget Sound is rapidly decaying and losing population.

By 2015 we may end up like Detroit, with grass growing in shopping malls and abandoned condos collapsing into the mud.

how is this news? Its equally as bad now as 15 years ago. try living just S of 45th and E of the freeway. someone lit a fire under some cops' ass but their 'presence' won't change anything. They'll still be back home at nite when the rats come out.

The cops in the U District are too busy beating up jaywalkers on the Ave to do anything about gangsters with guns.

They only report crimes up to N 45th - the rest aren't reported, even though that area has tons of students too.

Many of the crimes that occur in the 1700 block around 45th are most likely drunken fights between frat boys. Either that, or criminals know that they can find rich students from the greek system walking outside drunk, flashing their iPhones.

another Andy@ 16, you misread @13's comment...

AF said that "anything other than a bar, head shop, or used clothing store is going to open up in the U-Village". In other words, those are the only stores left on the Ave.

Get it now?

Um, aren't "robberies" crimes that are perpetrated in/against an establishment? Someone beating you up on the street for your wallet or cell phone would be "mugging."

Hey thanks Inspektor Corrector. Sometimes my sense of humor doesn't come across on a comment thread. I was mostly joking about "as goes shops, so goes society." I'll have to use an emoticon or something next time.

Not sure if anyone is still reading, but all I meant is that the Ave isn't much of a retail environment. With the exception of the U-Bookstore, the movie theaters, and maybe a few restaurants, there isn't any reason for any "responsible" adult to shop there. Ballard, Freemont, and Pike/Pine all manage to pull off being hip while having reasons for people other than broke young people to visit. The Ave doesn't. Maybe Dominic can explain how it's all the fault of zoning height requirements. In any case, I think the poor streetscape is one cause of violence on the Ave.
