Big Ups from Bangladesh

Posted by on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 3:41 PM

Jennifer, a Slog reader headed to Bangladesh to work at a hospital, sent over a note from the program manager there. It closes like this:

At the end, we congratulate your Black Diamond First Afro American President Barack H. Obama. We are looking for his dynamic leadership for country and the whole world.

Best regards.

I just got back from Saudi Arabia... the people I met there are very excited about what they see as a vast improvment in our management... Threw me an inauguration party, as a matter of fact... It was fun to see on the big screen eating Middle Eastern cuisine and being taught how to ululate as a celebration ..

Sounds better in person, though

That's his comic superhero persona -- the Black Diamond. Superpowers include the ability to mesmerize entire stadiums with his mind-boggling DiamondVision.

Out on the street for a living
Picture's only begun
They got you under their thumb
Hit it

Out on the streets for a living
Picture's only begun
Your day is sorrow and madness
They got you under their thumb

Whoo, black diamond
Whoo, black diamond

Darkness will fall on the city
It seems to follow you too
And though you don't ask for pity
Theres nothin' that you can do, no, no

Whoo, black diamond
Whoo, black diamond

Out on the streets for a living
Picture's only begun
Your day is sorrow and madness
They got you under their thumb

Whoo, black diamond, yeah
Whoo, black diamond

It's a South African marketing term, according to something called MarketingWeb: "Black diamonds refer to the so-called booming black middle class, but now the sophisticated term making the rounds is afropolitan.... The term black diamond was coined in research conducted by the UCT Unilever Institute and TNS Research Surveys." http://tinyurl.com/cetz6l
