J&M Cafe Closed

Posted by on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 6:22 PM

The J&M Cafe and Cardroom has apparently closed. A sign on the club's door says the owners have shut down and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The club, located at 1st Avenue South and South Washington Street in Pioneer Square, was one of 14 nightclubs targeted by City Attorney Tom Carr, The Seattle Police Department and Mayor Greg Nickels in a nightlife sting in September 2007.

Famous for John Wayne's tough cop scene in "McQue".

so? well, as hernandez questions just above, where will they go now? well, right now they are migrating between lower queen anne, freemont, and capitol hill. and to be honest, i liked pioneer square for what it was. they had their space. i have no desire to see them find the comet, and comment amongst themselves about how great it is, but how much better it could be if it had "better" music, and, you know, more girls dancing on the bar. also, is there someone we can fight around here?

How about bad business plan, economic downturn, mismanagement instead of blaming law enforcement or city officials. You can't win, if someone gets shot you complain about lack of enforcement. If you enforce you complain about police over reaching. File under no common sense.

Sigh, I remember getting lunch down there when I worked in South Downtown.

I've never been a fan of the place once the nighttime crowd starts showing up, but it was great for afternoons and early evening.

Hopefully like Merchant's Cafe someone else will take over the space and continue to run a bar/restaurant there.

pioneer square in general is going even further into the sewer. for those of us who've lived downtown for years (decades), it's obvious that the police have divested from the Square, and are now keeping the beautfiul people safe in Belltown. Lots of shops closing in the Square, lots more crime happening, people are scared to go down there. It's not specific to the J&M, it's the entire district that has gone downhill, and yes I'd attribute it to lack of enforcement and police presence.

Nobody wants to head into a district where they're scared.

In comes the criminal element, out goes the $$.
