Bike Lanes Coming to Fauntleroy

Posted by on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:26 PM

It's official:

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced today its decision to change Fauntleroy Way SW to make it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, reduce vehicle speeds and collisions, and still maintain current capacity.

After work is completed, the 1.3 mile stretch will feature one travel lane in each direction, a center two-way left turn lane, a bicycle lane northbound and shared lane pavement markings (sharrows) southbound. Marked crosswalks will be added at SW Brandon Street and 40th Avenue SW, south of SW Juneau Street. On-street parking will remain, though a minimal number of spaces may be impacted by improved bus zones.

Residents have expressed concerns about excessive speeds on Fauntleroy Way SW, which has a posted 35 miles per hour speed limit. Creating a single through lane for each direction has been shown in national studies to calm traffic, creating a safer environment for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

Sorry, whiners: Traffic on Fauntleroy is going to slow down a little bit (perhaps even to the speed limit? The horror!) so that cyclists and pedestrians can be a little safer. Deal with it.

Good for West Seattle. About time....

but:

"Sorry, whiners: Traffic on Fauntleroy is going to slow down a little bit (perhaps even to the speed limit? The horror!) so that cyclists and pedestrians can be a little safer. Deal with it."

Can you grow the fuck up and not be a sore winner? You sound like a child.

You beat me to it. Seriously, quit gloating. I still cannot believe you call what you do journalism.

@3 Take solace in knowing she's the only one who does. I can't believe so many PI writers are going out and she'll still have a job.

And people wonder why sloggers give her such a hard time.

One thing that would make this work a whole lot better is if the Southworth/Vashon to downtown ferry actually happens. A whole bunch of the rush hour traffic on Fauntleroy is islanders getting off the ferry at Lincoln park and then driving through West Seattle to get downtown.

Westside forever - it's not happening, according to the Draft Long-Range Plan from WSF, who came to Fauntleroy for a public hearing we covered the other night.

Man, everyone ease up. Most slog posts are about as sassy, and the treatment of Erica's snide comments is a complete double standard.

Plus, that last paragraph wasn't even that mean. Especially to someone who has lived in the area. Seriously.

i guess this begs the question of the majority of commenters to this post: did you lose? was this a situation where your interests were severely impacted by a decision meant to increase the public safety and create streets that are more friendly to all modes of traffic?

really?

if you're so stuck on the position that cars are the only way to urban salvation and that transportation in this city can never evolve without wrecking the economy, or our <100 year heritage, then let me recommend a few other metropolises for you to live in (phoenix and a few spots in texas come to mind).

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I'm sure the rest of the neighborhood is just going to love all of the additional cut-through traffic that will result from reducing capacity on a key arterial.

Oh yeah, nice sham public process, too.

Ha.

Now my plans for the tunnel are complete and West Seattle will sit in traffic jams forever!
