This Is Kind of Cool

Posted by on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 4:39 PM

This is a viral marketing video for the Watchmen movie. You've got to admire the attention to period piece detail in the thing:

I'm not usually one to spread the viral marketing, but I think this one's pretty neat. It comes from a website for the New Frontiersman, which is a right-wing paper that appears in Watchmen. It's a really lame website and there's no reason to go there.

I like how they list two actual historical events and follow that with a third alternate history event. Same as on the old Star Trek. It sucks that whenever you want to enjoy a trope like that you have to turn to a second rate author instead of somebody with talent and shit.

i love the way the "brilliant gov't scientist" is a finely chisled, square-jawed adonis in his late 20's.

I've not read the Watchmen comic, but wouldn't someone like this be feared and locked in a cage to be "studied"? Or is that what we've come to expect after 8 years of Bush? Maybe it was different in the '60s, when science was actually respected.

Apparently surviving a nuclear accident gave him a big, blue package, as well.

@6, me too. I had to turn 300 off at about 25% in, because it was so bad, and I don't want to support this director. But as a huge fan of the graphic novel, I would love to see all of it reimagined in live action. I already got a little giddy watching the trailers, so I'll probably cave and see it.

"period detail"? Paul, you so young that you think those details are accurate? The period props were awful in that viral video you just promoted -- from the XLR mic cords, to the modern dress shirt worn by the dark-haired news anchor, to the cheesy sunglasses, to the modern-style silk-screened tee shirt worn by the 5 year old boy.

If the movie is anywhere close to this I have absolutely no interest.
