Pro-Gay Family Ads Rejected by Los Angeles ABC Affiliate

Posted by on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM

Earlier this month, the group GetToKnowUsFirst.org produced a series of (sweet and smart) pro-gay family ads to be aired in California during Tuesday's inauguration. As Towleroad reports, "The group aired the spot in 42 of California's 58 counties (everywhere Prop 8 passed by more than 50%) during Tuesday's coverage," but the ad was conspicuously absent from the L.A. ABC affiliate KABC, which refused to air the ad, deeming it "too controversial" for the inauguration, when "many families will be watching."

Apparently, some families need to be protected from the sight of other families. Full series of ads below.

Those are great commercials, but christians don't care. They'll see them and say the same thing... I don't hate the sinner, I hate the sin, my minister tells me what to do, why can't they just get civil unions (they are unaware that DOMA kills that idea), blah, blah, blah.

But it was worth a try.

How are these commercials controversial? I don't get it.
Great ads -- too bad they didn't come out three months ago.

Did you see Obama removed bans from gays in military.

How about that?

Pretty gay friendly right?

who owns the airwaves? we do, in theory. in practice, commerce owns them, and any message that does not help commerce is not welcome. when an NBA player tells kids its cool to read, that helps the team, the player, the NBA, and the station to look like good corporate citizens. but dyke families are as helpful in that as an adbusters buy-nothing day ad.

sample letter I wrote:

I am writing to express my disappointment over your station’s refusal to air the PSAs put on by Get to Know Us First. It is extremely saddening that a news outlet would deem images of happy and health y gay families as “too controversial.” You do a disservice to your viewers, both gay and straight, who have been denied the opportunity to learn about real gay families and the importance of marriage for all families. Your refusal to air these stories contributes to an atmosphere where stereotypes and lies about gay people and their families can be spread with impunity, ultimately costing gay families the rights, recognition and protection that all families deserve.

It was ABC that put up, during the inauguration, a large lettering from Psalms in the bible on the screen condemning people for adoring "Princes" and not "God". Disgusting bullshit from a "news" organization.

Those were pretty good. At least from my perspective... got a little teary-eyed, I must admit. I've often thought that if the anti-gay marriage folks really got to know just how mundane and ordinary gay couples can be (as in "are my kids drinking too much juice") that that would go a long way.

There should be some sort of reality show showcasing the lives of gay families. Reality shows seem to be a good way to reach the masses these days... has Wife Swap, or that other family switching show whose name I can't remember ever featured a gay couple? That would be pretty awesome...

Gay families are cool. I'm gay myself. But I'm forever glad I had maternal love and paternal love on a daily basis growing up. Yeah, I know - an Aunt Sue or Uncle Bob is there to fill that void - but non-immediate family members have their own lives and sometimes move away.

That said, I hope the ads eventually air.

Chip Chipmunk--what the f*k are you saying? You're forever glad you had maternal and paternal love? So because you're glad that you had a mom and a dad, the only good and permissible families are those with a mom and dad? So, no single parents, no divorced parents, no adoptions by single people, if the mom dies the dad has to give the kid up for adoption?

Give me a break. If that's what you think is good for you, huzzah for you. I know plenty of people who turned out just fine for having a single parent (where the other was absent, or certainly not present on a "daily basis.") The examples of an abusive parent are also legion, and certainly having an abusive mother or father is worse than having none.

Don't try to impose your self-hating on the rest of us.

@16 -- whoa there. Lots of projection going on.

I am glad I know my father's love and my mother's love.

I'm gay too.

Where's the "self-hate" in any of that?

Chill pill, dean p............

Dean p: Like @17 said, you extrapolated my point into absurd projections.
Gay adoption is absolutely wonderful. I just have the sentiment that str8 couples provide the optimal way to bring kids into the world. Don't ask me to explain it, but that's the way I feel. That doesn't make gay parenting any less vital and important.

@18 "I just have the sentiment that str8 couples provide the optimal way to bring kids into the world. Don't ask me to explain it, but that's the way I feel. That doesn't make gay parenting any less vital and important."

So, if 'str8' couples provide the optimal way to raise kids (I'm assuming that's what you meant by "bring kids into the world.") and gay parenting isn't any less vital and important, then gay parents are also optimal.

Either that, or you're lying when you say gay parents are just as vital. If you want to sound logical, try to understand how logic works.

They don't have to be equivocated. Yes, I have a bias, totally subjective opinion - and I still think it's fine for gay parents to have kids or adopt kids. I'm not lying about either. Now go calculate Pi.

I posted my letter:

I just learned that your station refused to air a series of pro gay marriage because it was scheduled to air during a time when many families might see it, including children. So am I to conclude from this that by just showing gay couples holding hands is too repugnant and traumatizing to broadcast?

This is the very essence of bigotry. It is also censorship.

I am not from your state, but I'm taking of note of who advertises on your website. And if a boycott is organized against your station's advertisers, I plan to join it.

You should be ashamed.

All I have to say is that If any of you have a problem with gay marriage, well don't you marry a gay person....! Simple as that, mind your own business, get a life.....! :)
