"Obama's Life Story Now an Anti-Abortion Ad"

Posted by David Schmader on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 5:05 PM

As the Washington Post reports:

While much of America was watching the inauguration of President Obama, BET viewers were seeing Obama's life story turned into an anti-abortion ad. In the 41-second ad, sponsored by catholicvote.org, a camera slowly zooms in on a fetus in a womb as these words appear on the screen: "This child's future is a broken home. He will be abandoned by his father. His single mother will struggle to raise him. Despite the hardships he will endure this child will become the 1st African-American President." The ad ends with a photograph of President Obama and this message: "Life: Imagine the Potential."

Here's the ad:

More Washington Post:

[U]sing Obama's story to argue against abortion seems disingenuous at best, exploitive at worst. Obama's parents were married when he was born. There's no evidence Obama's mother ever considered an abortion. And as my Dallas Morning News colleague Bruce Tomaso points out, "couldn't you make the same argument about anyone? If Tim McVeigh's mom had had an abortion, might those 168 people in Oklahoma City still be alive?"

Thank you, Slog tipper Cynthia.

Someone needs to inform these numbskulls of the millions of women every year who carry unplanned pregnancies to term.

Yes, every single last aborted blastocyst would've grown up to be the President. We'd have to change presidents every fifteen seconds just to keep up with the supply, but it would be worth it because life is precious.

Planned Parenthood should alter this ad by replacing "African-American" with "retarded" and showing a picture of the George W Bush.

I feel nauseated. Nothing like using an inspirational figure to inspire women to keep babies they don't want and can't afford.

Seems like anybody should be able to argue, or attempt to persuade, anyone of anything, and that's what free speech is about.

The problem is when somebody wants to enforce their predilections with the force of law. THAT is the Bad Thing. Arguing, persuading, advertising, whatever...marketplace of ideas.

What the fuck do you expect? It's the Catholic Fucking Church, for Chrissakes. Hell, most card-carrying Catholics don't even take them seriously when it comes to reproductive issues. Sheesh.

There's still an anti-abortion movement? Seriously? We pay any attention to them for what reason?

It seems to me that crowd falls into the same category as the anti-gay marriage crowd -- religious, aging, and dying off.

The sane people win. Hooray. Let's move on.

As said earlier, you could use that argument about Tim McVeigh, or Stalin, or Hitler, or Pol Pot, or Beethoven, or Boz Scaggs, or...

Many conservative Catholics have been spoon-fed this carefully crafted idea that Barak is a dangerous liberal who will serve fetuses as hors d'oeuvre at Planned Parenthood fundraisers in the East Room.

But now they see this message, from one of their own organizations, saying what a wonderful thing it was that his mother didn't get an abortion.....

The protestant wingnuts, who are usually suspicious of the Catholics anyway, won't know what to do with this message either.

It will be interesting to see how this ad plays out, and how long it hangs around.

Yeah. What about Hitler? "this young man would go on to fail out of art school, enter politics and start the second World War and the Holocaust."

If Barbara Bush had aborted George W Bush the WORLD would be a better place...... And I know she had a coat hanger somewhere. Probally a solid gold one at that.

When science starts trumping politics we will stop slaughtering millions of innocent humans.
The liberals kill off their own children so the pro-life percentage keeps growing.

It's not a bad thing to discourage abortion - as Bill Clinton said, abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.

now if only these 'pro-life' hypocrites would stop doing things that create more need for abortions. (like denying horny teenagers contraception.)

"The liberals kill off their own children so the pro-life percentage keeps growing."

Yeah, like in that movie "Idiocracy".

I can see it when society finally collapses, a with hordes of "conservative" crowding into the mega-churches, but with no electricity to power their electric guitars, giant video monitors and make-up lights, the whole thing will strangely fulfilling, and it will seem like God has abandoned them.

And as they lay dying of starvation and disease, having fought and killed their fellow conservatives over that last loaf of wonder bread, perhaps they'll realize that this God they so cloying ingratiated themselves to was really an early, remarkably effective, marketing experiment.

But probably not. They'll die whimpering for their mommy, and disappear into the oblivion that eventually engulfs us all.....

What a shame. It was a really nice planet. Too bad we had to come along and mess it up.

Oh, btw, Happy Friday, Everyone! Who's bringing donuts?

Oops, instead of "the whole thing will strangely fulfilling", which makes no sense whatsoever, it should read "the whole thing will seem strangely unfulfilling"

Or perhaps The Lord was guiding my pen?????

They died whimpering for their mommy, and disappeared into the oblivion that eventually engulfs us all as the abortionist instruments ripped them into pieces.

Noting all the references to Hitler. Hilter was an abortionist. You can ease your conscience by calling a child a "blastocyst" instead of a human, but that doesn't change the facts.
