This is not an argument. It's a bandwagon fallacy.

It's also a facebook group... How much weight is really there? You what other groups have more than 1000 members, the "Batman sucks.... Spider-Man is much better!" group. Woo Hoo!

I just heard a bit on NPR that mentioned that you would be speaking at the rally tomorrow. It also mentioned that the facebook page had 850 members. I had to laugh a bit at using that to make the point that there are people that support the mayor...

Unless Breedlove coughs up proof he was 17, Sam's my man.

And even then, screw Facebook.

"It's Not the Crime, It's the Coverup..."

Would we be so supportive if this guy was a Republican? Were we supportive of Mark Foley?

The press shouldn't have asked the question, but Sam Adams shouldn't have lied about it. What is worse? Boinking an 18 (possibly 17) year old or covering up the fact you boinked an an 18 (possibly 17) year old?

If Sam Adams carried wood -- he he, wood -- for a political party that was aggressively anti-gay, one that opposed equality for gay Americans, and even opposed the idea that sex between two consenting adults of sex should be legal (George Bush and the GOP opposed to the Supreme Court's decision overturning state bans on consensual adult sodomy), then it would be harder to support Adams in this.

But Adams is not, per Foley, per Haggard, per Craig, a hypocrite. He didn't rail against gay sex in his public life—or help bolster the majority in the house of reps for a party unified only by its opposition to gay equality—while enjoying gay sex in his private life.

not gonna do facebook, nopers. but I do support him, because all I see is that Willamette Week has some sort of muckraking agenda, don't know what exactly their motivations are, but they certainly don't seem to have anything going for them but to bring people down. But in their defense, I guess thats a sort of journalism... the crappy sort.

The total is no longer about Sam Adams, it is about Dan Savage's ego. He thinks the skyrocketing number is because of him and he is bragging.

From Dan's column on July 17, 2008:

I'm a 19-year-old gay boy, and while I have tried dating guys my own age, I realized a long time ago that I am far more interested (romantically and sexually) in older men. I understand, though, that many older men out there looking for a guy my age may not have the best of intentions. Do you have any tips for someone in my situation?

Timid Whelp In Needa Knowledge

Gay men in their 30s and 40s who will date teenage boys are almost always scum, TWINK, as you've surmised. But gay guys in their 30s and 40s who will date 23-year-olds? Some are scum, of course, because some of everyone is scum, but the scum makes up a far smaller percentage of the total. And these nonscummy older men are much more likely to be interested in a 23-year-old who has his shit together.

So I would advise you to skip the older guys who'll date you now and go and get your shit together. Get your ass into a decent college, fuck the odd TA (and they're all odd) to earn a little dating-and-mating wisdom, and then, after you graduate, take your gathered figurative shit to a big city where you'll meet plenty of attractive, older men.

Oh, and all the angry middle-aged gay men out there who "date" teenage boys and don't regard themselves as scum: Spare me the angry e-mails, fellas. I didn't say that you're all scum, guys, I wrote that you're "almost always scum." Unfortunately, scum never thinks it's scum, which can make it difficult to tell the scummy ones and nonscummy ones apart, particularly for young and inexperienced guys.

end column

And now Dan wants to rally as many people as he can in support of someone who is most probably scum? WTF, talk about double standards. Unfuckingbelievable!

I'm opposed to blowing loads on White House interns. I think that's a scummy thing to do -- particularly when you're married. But I don't think Clinton should've been impeached for it.

See the difference?

If the kid was 17, does that change anything for you? Because I would say it's highly likely. What makes you think he's telling the truth now? I would think this could hurt your credibility Dan, which I would hate to see...

Dan - Love ya, but this is knee jerk stuff. You are stretching your principles to defend one of the tribe. It happens - sure - but that does not justify the lies, the mock outrage at the original charge ("Are you calling me a gay predator?! How dare you?!!!) that smeared another good man's name while conveniently driving him out of the mayoral race, and just the general sleaze factor of it all.

The column cited by #16 is just one of many similar opinions on this style of behavior you have put into print. I don't think he needs to resign either, but I am surprised you can rush to his front line defense without holding your nose. If he were straight, your reaction would be mockery. I just thought you had more self awareness than this.

Hey - and Julie from Chicago - welcome to Eugene!

Oh come on. Dan Savage is just being consistent. He was a big supporter of Spokane's Republican gay mayor Jim West when he got caught hustling 18 year old boys. Weren't you, Dan?

Dan, on a completely unrelated matter, I think I saw your boyfriend riding a bike a day or so ago down Broadway/10th Ave E with no helmet. Could you invest in one for him and make him wear it? You're bossy enough. He's cute, but drooling into incontinence pants in a wheelchair because of an accident is *not* hot.

If it wasn't him, feel free to ignore. But I think it was.

Seattle doesn't know what Portland remembers: the Neil Goldschmidt scandal. Another mayor (who went on to be governor AND secretary pf transportation) who, it turned out, was boinking the baby sitter all along.

Oh, use your heads! Almost without exception, guys in their 40's who fuck people (however legal they may be) in their teens are scum, and remarkably unattractive as well. However, when a public official has not violated the law or the documented ethics rules of his or her office, the public has no business asking him/her to resign. He can be interpersonally scummy and a perfectly competent and ethically compliant mayor all at once.

Oh. And the Facebook thing is DUMB. If I found my supporters flocking to Facebook as a means of showing the depth of their committment to my cause, I would crawl into the Willamette and wait for the cold to take me. That said, I'm awfully glad that Dan is making the drive to stand up for what's right at the rally. Thanks, Dan.

Clinton's actions but mostly the lies caused a two year drama that cost Al Gore the election.

So no Dan, we don't see the difference. Politicians who lie, repeatedly, don't deserve support rallies.
