Art at the UW Light Rail Station Tonight!

Posted by on Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 3:35 PM

3f25/1232580845-leoberk_lightingtest.jpgRemember the fighter-jet-art controversy? Well, tonight there'll be another public discussion about art at a light rail station—this time about the art at the future UW station—at 7 pm at MOHAI. According to the press release,

Artist Leo Saul Berk has been commissioned to create an original artwork suitable for an institution of higher education and a world-class research facility, and that addresses the enormous scale of the 110 feet underground station.

I don't know exactly what he's got planned, but at left is the image Sound Transit provided and here's some of his other work.

can we worry about the art in 5 years when the station is 5 years away from opening?

Should be fun - too bad I'll have to miss it.

The initial art they were talking about for the station was mostly a geologic cutaway, with backing lights and pictographs - hope this is not as dark as that one was!

Those remind me of the pancakes at the now-gone IHOP.

Max, in five years the station will be two years from opening, with construction nearly done. All the design decisions will be long past. The time is now to influence the course of future events.

Leo Saul Berk is a great artist, who makes smart, challenging art that co-opts technology in the best way.
He is a perfect choice for this station.
Me, I trust him. Whatever he makes will be cool.
