It's Funny 'Cause It's True

Also, seriously: Bless this presidency for its tolerance of Rick Warren's intolerance. I don't want four or eight years of retaliatory governing from the Democrats. I want a president who's going to try to find a way to make this country work for everyone, even bigoted shitheads, who might eventually learn a thing or two from being included instead of just vilified. Someone's got to take the high road, and since it's never going to be Republicans and fundamentalists, it's up to Democrats and progressives.

If ever there was a day for potentially ridiculous hopefulness, this is it.

(Thanks for the heads-up on the cartoon, WOW Report.)

Thank you, David for that intelligent and thoughtful post.

That's what I am hoping for too.

"So, Rick, the guy you prayed for just said gays were equal with us, what's that all about, huh? What, do you support this? What's wrong with you?"

I forgot that evangelicals pray like this. Oooooh, Rexalla, gurl.

Dude, his speech was totally classy and uncontroversial. This really is a non-issue.

Pastor Warren and his church are like Wal-Mart or AOL, or Applebees: Lowest common denominator, and driven by profit. If Warren found a way to increase collections by doing live gay sex shows in the basement, he would.

On balance, I think it will do much more damage for him in the wingnut community than in the gay community.

@5: Actually, I think live gay sex shows in the basement would draw a crowd. I mean, a different crowd, but I know people who'd spend $20 a week and get up before noon on a Sunday for that kind of action.

No recriminations. Let's move on please.

#4: His prayer would be noncontroversial if it wasn't oozing hypocrisy.

@6: $20 a week is nothing compared to 10% of suburbanites' income.

After hearing Warren, I just have to say:

A) People go to his church? Why? He sounds like a car salesman who has already met his quota for the month, both dishonest and disinterested.

B) He didn't need to be there. If Obama thinks putting one of their sleaze merchants on the podium will win the Religious Right, he's forgetting what hate filled, opportunist bastards they are.

Every time Warren makes you mad, look at a picture of his face and picture him singing "Loving You" falsetto. It might help.

T. D. Jakes of Dallas mega-church infamy, who has called homosexuality "an abomination before God" was given the pulpit for the service in St. John the Divine Cathedral this morning. Mr Obama seems to enjoy giving the spotlight to ministers who do not like homosexuals during this inauguration.

So I see that no one's face melted when Warren spoke. That's good.

@12, at least get your paranoia straight. St. John the Divine is in New York City. This is St. John's church in DC:

~~~
Bishop T.D. Jakes, the Dallas megachurch pastor, will preach at the private church service that President-elect Barack Obama will attend the morning of his inaugural, The Associated Press has learned.
The next day, an interfaith National Prayer Service will be held in the National Cathedral to cap the inauguration, featuring Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu clergy, along with pastors from mainline Protestant, evangelical and Orthodox Christian traditions.
Jakes will give the sermon Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. St. John's, dubbed the "Church of the Presidents," sits across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House.
