Two-Way Biden

Posted by on Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Joe Biden's wife Jill, in a surprise appearance on Oprah, just accidentally let slip with the fact that, during the campaign, Joe Biden was offered his choice of either Vice President or Secretary of State in an Obama Administration. Joe Biden immediately shushed his wife and said that that wasn't a fact for public consumption.

The vice president-elect tried to hush his wife as soon as the words came out of her mouth, with a loud "shhh!" that sent the audience into laughter.

The Bidens made a surprise appearance on Winfrey's show, recorded at the Kennedy Center for broadcast later Monday on the eve of the inauguration. The celebrity-filled show also included the premiere of "America's Song," performed by Faith Hill, Seal, Bono, Mary J. Blige, Will.i.am and David Foster in honor of the occasion and available for free download on Winfrey's Web site.

The vice president-elect said he only accepted Obama's offer to be his running mate after talking it over with "Jilly," his pet name for his wife. Mrs. Biden said she told him vice president would be better for the family.

"If you're secretary of state, you'll be away, we'll never see you, you know," she said. "I'll see you at a state dinner once and awhile. But I said, if you are vice president, the entire family, because they worked so hard for the election, they can be involved. They can come to our home. They can go to events, they can be with us all the time. And that's what's important to us."

Biden is available for any position you want him in.

Yeah, who cares? I fail to see why this is a story.

This really worked out, because I'm sure when Hills and Bill were discussing which position she should take, he said Secretary of State would be much better for the family.

Nonstory. Unless you were asleep AND hidden under a rock when Obama began vetting his running mate, you knew he wanted to capture Biden in a significant admin position before moving on to other persons. As poster #8 says, Biden is available for anything, and can do most anything. Great choice for both. Love Biden.

I wanted Biden for President, quite frankly. But I'm very pleased with how things worked out. Biden's energy and smarts should be tapped and appreciated. Glad he chose family...he's already done the SOS stuff as Chair of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and can still be a top advisor to Obama.
