Edgar Allan Poe Is 200 Today

Posted by on Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe. To celebrate, here is Vincent Price narrating "The Raven:"

And here is a stop-motion film of "Annabel Lee" with creepy doll erotica (including doll foot massage!) and a really awful soundtrack:

And here is my favorite Poe short story, "The Cask of Amontillado." I read this when I was way too young and I think it's for that reason that this story still creeps me way the fuck out.

It looks like the Poe Toaster made his annual visit to Poe's grave last night, too. It's one of my favorite odd literary traditions.

No one is cooler than Vincent Price no one. A couple of years before he died he was interviewed on Halloween on some show. The interview asked Vincent why he did not wear a costume. Vincent pointed to his red shirt and black pants saying "I'm wearing a bit of blood (pointing to his shirt) and a bit of death(pointing to his pants)"

CLASSY!!

Oh, Paul. That video clip of Annabel Lee is just three minutes of excerpts from a twenty-minute short film. Somebody cut it together to make a cheesy music video for their own cheesy music. The actual film, which doesn't use that music at all, is excellent and available on DVD here:

The artist who made the film is George Higham. Here's his website:

On an early-ish episode of The Wire:

White Tourist: "Excuse me, can you tell me where the Poe House is?"

Black woman, on front steps of row house: "Poe house? Look around you, every house 'round here is a poe house."

Ba Dum Ching.

A similar thing happened to me- I read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" when I was eleven and haven't been brave enough to reread it since.

Here is the essay "Edgar Allan Poe" written by German horror writer Hanns Heinz Ewers and translated by me. Ewers was Germany's Edgar Allan Poe
