President Bush's Farewell Speech

Are you listening? Feel free to comment here. I would LiveSlog it and comment myself... but I just turned the radio off. I can't bear it. I can't listen. I just want it to be over.

UPDATE: Looks like Obama couldn't bear it either:

Obama wisely didn't listen to Bush. He went out to dinner.
From the pool report: "At 8 pm, just as pres bush began his farewell speech peotus obama left blair house for the 30 second drive to equinox restaurant on connecticut and I st."

I am going to hold my breath until he says how proud he was to serve....

Basically he thanked people for their support and talked about 9/11. Same old same old.

It's as if he hasn't been paying attention to his own presidency for the past eight years. He's saying goodbye to an era that only exists in his own head. "This nation must always stand up for justice and truth"!?!?!

I should have followed Dan's lead and just turned it off.

I never want to hear him speak again unless it's to give a guilty plea.

@ 8 -- You took the words right out of my mouth. I hope that the next time I see him on camera, they're broadcasting from the Hague.

Right wing idiots talk a lot about the supposed parallels between Obama and Hitler because they're constantly grasping for straws, but listening to Bush talk about how we can't protect our country without "The expansion of liberty abroad" sounds much worse than mandatory civil service in that regard.

I've never quite understood why people listen to politicians. I don't even listen to politicians that I've got a relative appreciation for. Their speechs tend to be predictable and lack substance, and if they actually say anything important, it'll be repeated much more concisely in the paper the next day.

We haven't had another terrorist attack since 9/11, that proves I was doing a good job

Is like:

Homer: Not a bear in sight, the bear patrol is working like a charm!
Lisa: That's specious reasoning, dad.
Homer: Thank you Lisa.
Lisa (sighing): By your logic, I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Hmm, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work, it's just a stupid rock!
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: ...but I don't see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.

When did The Stranger first start printing the number of days on the cover? I can remember when it was over a thousand. Now it's five. Almost gone, almost gone, great God a'mighty, they're almost gone.

We started printing those numbers the week after the last election, Fnarf, in 2004. I am SO glad that they disappear from the cover next week. I didn't know if anyone even noticed them besides us.

If you are close to any fundies these are going to be some difficult days for them. Bush says goodbye tonight. Monday is MLK Day, their least favorite holiday and then on Tuesday Obama is sworn in complete with a gay & lesbian marching band and a gay bishop. ha ha ha ha ha.

Bush has proven how toothless and complacent a citizenry we've become. This proof is his lasting, inadvertent gift to us.

What will we do with this knowledge now that he is gone, and what will his masters do with this knowledge now that he is gone?

Those numbers on the cover have been a source of at least some inspiration for the last four years.

It's the first thing I've checked each week. Each major milestone (below 500, below 365, etc.) has brought a smile...finally dropping into double digits even brought a fist pump.

This came on while I was driving somewhere. I was curious after hearing the drunk rumors about the other speech... when he got to a part where he thanked the american people for the trust we'd given him my hand snapped out to flip the dial before I even realized I was moving. to butcher the old saw:

don't piss in my face and tell me it's raining.

I couldn’t bring myself to watch.

So Caligutard calmly informed the rapt audience that he and Darth Cheney will be wrapped up like mummies, soaked in gasoline then set ablaze on the National Mall as all 3,000+ of their current and former administration appointees throw themselves onto the largest flaming funeral pyre in world history, right?

Dan,
As usual, I will dissent from the overwhelming opinion here on SLOG. I did indeed, read his speech. Historians will judge Bush harshly in the immediate but history may judge him otherwise in the long term (50 years?). While many may wish him good riddance, I shall wish him and President-elect Obama Good Luck. Pres. Bush served our Republic for better or for worse.

Yeah, I know I will catch hell for this posting:

It was worse Lark. Iraq will go down in history as a major fiasco (as in Vietnam), and Bush may well go down as the President who ended the so-called "American Century."

Considering this pathetic post and your moronic defense of Samuel Alito blowing off a meeting with Obama, you deserve every bit of hell you catch.

Please go back to Sound Politics, or wherever it is that you and your fellow-traveling apologists for failed NeoCon policies go to commiserate.

Hey, Lark, in that article you linked to, every one of the puff points attempting to glorify Shrub can be discredited or shown to be a failure.

Specifically, this one: "And certainly to the women of Afghanistan thanking him for saving them from Taliban abuse, degradation and tyranny. "

Too lazy to find any and link, but there are stories coming out weekly now - WEEKLY - of women and girls being burned, scarred, and killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Your defense of Shrub: FAIL

Fuck you and fuck your pull-string puppets of the right for defending Shrub, he was a colossal fuck-up.

is it just me, or was Bush drunk during his farewell speech? the smirk and swagger from the podium...either he was really relieved, or he's hit the bottle again.

I thought the same thing. He stumbled coming up onto the raised platform and was slow and awkward in catching himself from falling. His head movements were odd , his eyes were glassy and he slurred a lot of his words. And he had that stupid grin of his that is always there even if he is talking about something solemn.

Whatever your political beliefs maybe, this is a poor example on Obama's part of how a president- elect and the new leader of the United States should bact. Not CLASSY at all and not taking the high road. As the incoming president, he is expected by the US and the WORLD to be a leader not just in word but BY EXAMPLE and at least exhibit the courtesies and manners that most of us are taught in childhood. Another principle to think about....and one that is very common but true, one that we have heard many times for years....What Goes Around Comes Around. Even if it has to go all the way around the World to come back to a person, it will. This not something made up by men, it is God's law and can never be broken. Be careful Obama what you sow.

@38 so what you're saying, Guest, is that Bush's house will be hit by cluster bombs, his fortune will be lost, and he'll be trillions in debt, and then he will drown in in huricane. What goes around, comes around. It's God's law.
