Currently Swinging

Posted by Jen Graves on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 4:13 PM

I'm not going to say anything about this yet. I will tell you that it's life-sized, it's made of clay and fake hair (which has swept a depression in the sand beneath the figure), and it's at Bellevue Arts Museum, in Tip Toland's show of figure sculptures. Toland was a Stranger Genius shorlister in 2007; more on her later. (I apologize for my bad video skills—I shot this yesterday and I'm inexperienced. But I do get to a closeup on the face at about 1:50, in case you start wondering.)

Um... this looks like real titties on the poster frame. Not a good idea for an open post.

Let me guess, the face is Toland's?

Actually, I gave Ms Graves a press pass, so she can take as many pictures or videos as she pleases!
Creepy? Imagine turning it on...in a dark gallery...with four other scuptures staring at you!
Can't wait to read the review.

The creepy passed for me pretty fast. I kept expecting her to slow down and stop. Her face looked blissed-out.

Beautiful detail work on the eye-wrinkles, or at least from what I can make out. What a lovely and spooky concept. Too bad I'm in the wrong state to see it in person.

BTW, thanks, Jen. I'm not a huge fan of video clips in quasi-print media, but this is just great. And with the permission of BAM, no less. Congrats.

the flattened out butt cheeks is a nice touch, but the hands dont show enough ligament to match the shoulders and collarbones.

and why do all that detail and just do a pubic mound with a line cut into it?

omg. I'm gonna have to cross the lake for this. Eeeeegh. This will be ingrained in my retinas for the rest of the evening. Definitely creepy.

Oh Will, why do you assume Hate? I thought you were about Hope and Promise and "Good Intentions". *sigh* Is compassionate conservativism really and truly dead?

Why do bosses hate employees who read SLOG? Why do employees have to read SLOG? Is it really that big a deal to employees with hateful bosses?

The detail is great, but the mouth is a little Resusci-Anne... *flashback to smell of peroxide*
