I've been giving that comment, by public artist Cheryl dos Remedios in a recent interview, some thought. Here she is talking about her LIV Project, which I devoted my column to this week—essentially, she is planning to redesign the street grid of Seattle.

What's going to happen to those poor people when a bus comes down the street and runs them over?

Wow -- that street suddenly looks so wide in the photo. I wish we could take all the streets and build on them (or at least 90 percent of them) leaving only the sidewalks as transportation corridors. The city would become dense and walkable like Venice.

How so? Hills, weather, and the distance between points would remain unchanged.

In other words, you could build to downtown-level densities from Roxbury to 145th, but it wouldn't make it any easier to walk from Downtown to Ballard.
