Always Be Closing

Posted by on Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:45 AM

In New York City:

After 60 years the Amato Opera will close its doors after this season. Anthony Amato, the company’s 88-year-old founder, gave the news to his company before Saturday night’s performance of “The Merry Widow.” Mr. Amato said he had sold the opera’s building on the Bowery in the East Village.

According to Wikipedia, the Amato "is [was] believed to be the only self-sustaining opera house in the United States."

At the L.A. Weekly:

After almost 30 years, the Theater Editor position in a city with 2,000 professional plays opening every year was determined by Phoenix to be a fiscal extravagance... Much earlier, Phoenix eliminated the Theater Editor position at their flagship New York paper, The Village Voice, in a city that's the theater capital of the world. So their latest, local beheading is hardly surprising.

(New Times/VVM won't let their papers cover local politics. New Times/VVM prohibits political endorsements. And they're eviscerating arts coverage. What, exactly do those people think weeklies are for?)

In (slightly) brighter news, the Magic Theater in San Francisco got a reprieve:

The Magic Theatre's emergency fundraising appeal had raised $293,820 by midday Friday. That's well below the $350,000 goal the company had set for its "viral" campaign for individual donations received through Friday, but doesn't include an anonymous challenge grant received late in the week that will match any contributions made through today, up to a total of $100,000. Consequently, the Magic has extended its campaign deadline until midnight.

UPDATE

re: "New Times/VVM won't let their papers cover local politics."

Mike Seely, managing editor of the Seattle Weekly, protests: "We don't discourage covering local politics. We cover local politics."

Right. Sorry. I guess I haven't been paying attention.

London is the theater capital of the (English-speaking) world.

I thought VVM papers just didn't make endorsements.
