Re: The Morning News

Posted by Bethany Jean Clement on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Mr. Pickus, wouldn't that be "Sleeping with the sea kittens"?

And in morning apparent non-national-news: Ricin bar crawlers last night at the Madison Pub and Purr said CNN had been around with a camera crew; one patron at the Wild Rose said she'd seen them filming inside the Eagle earlier in the evening. Nothing can be found on CNN's website at present. But here's KING 5's video.

Yes, the drama queens were hoping for CNN and all they got was KING-5. (Why wasn't Jim Foreman...aka Mr. X.... doing the story, btw?)

And guess which bar they filmed the story in front of and inside of???

One of the official pub crawl bars?? Hell NO!!!

They did the story at MADISON PUB!!! (Yes the same Madision Pub that was not on the list of pub crawl bars!)

They showed scenes of a vibrant 8pm crowd at the bar, interviewed Joey, the bar manager, and a couple of patrons on camera, and filmed the "live" stand-up from the Bank parking lot across the street with Madison Pub (with a line out the door) in the background.

Oh the irony....

Hot on the heels of the brilliant "sea kittens" publicity stunt, PETA successfully lobbies for the release of a lobster, proving that they are capable of anthropomorphizing any-damn-thing. Presumably their campaign against the holocaust of bug-zappers begins Monday.

I guess CNN wanted some footage ready if people started getting sick. No ricin, no story, I guess!

Bethany Jean @3: that was this first version of the Pub Crawl poster. Subsequent versions deleted Madison Pub (see Dan Savage's post here: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive… ), and the Seattle Times article said that all the bars who got the letters EXCEPT for Madision Pub were participating in the Pub Crawl.

Whether it's true that MadPub declined to participate or not is arguable. But there were a lot of negative comments yesterday about how MadPub doesn't support the community, yada, yada, yada.

Thus, the irony of the KING -5 story location.

"PETA successfully..."

You read those words a lot, don't you? Why is that?

Yesterday I was reading up on the California Prop 2 campaign. I was looking back prior to the election in various forums and blogs debating Prop 2, and I saw they were filled with PETA and other animal rights folks doing their usual flamboyant, over-the-top stuff, anthropomorphizing and all that. Being excessively creative and getting flamed for it.

Meanwhile, the frat boys and macho internet tough guys were posting all their usual canned remarks: "tasty, tasty animals", "this is going to make me buy more veal [or whatever]", leather wearing biker gangs vs rich ladies in fur, blah, blah. You've read these boilerplate catchphrases a hundred times; you know the words.

So. What happened? Animal rights won, with 63% of the vote.

Is there a lesson there? Oh no. Nothing to learn here. Keep copying and pasting the same slogans, keep mocking PETA's silly, absurd tactics, if winning 37% of the vote is good enough for you.

@7: It's so adorable the way you pretend to merely "admire" PETA for their successful tactics. Don't be coy, elen. If you support PETA, come out of the closet and own it.

I will continue mocking their cheap appeals to emotion and brain-dead politics, even while supporting some of their positions, because ultimately I think that even successful political movements based on getting people to turn off their brains and vote with their Disney-fried hearts are a detriment to the democratic process. PETA is the very paragon of the most disturbing trends in public advocacy.

Also: Arthropods neither merit nor require full human rights.

Thx for the link, Mike! It seems okay to me that Mars and Driscoll get national attention, since other states need to be warned what's coming their way. We couldn't figure out how to tamp its growth here, so here's hoping that, with more attention, better minds or stiffer resolves elsewhere can show us how.

I support PETA, flamingbanjo. What of it?

Mock on, my friend, mock on. I would ask, if I may, that you guys please try to think up some new jokes. You know what I mean? "People Eating Tasty Animals"? How lazy can you get? It's boring me, frankly.

the general public rarely gets to see the 'real' gay community, like the people shown in King 5's story. Typically when gay people are on the news they're decked out for pride. An unfortunate situation caused the story, but I'm glad that joe six pack got a glimpse at a 'real' gay bar and its 'real' patrons. Hopefully a few minds were changed.

@13: I never said that. I do like "PETA-philes" though, although I admit it's too easy.

@8 and 11: Molly Worthen did a good job! Where did she get her information? She also gives good Protestant context. Since she was apparently writing for people with no historical background, maybe she should have pointed out that Calvin was a lawyer.

I've been waiting with interest to find out what became of Savage's religion beat idea. Is the NYT scooping him here in the Pacific Northwest? Says Worthen's last piece was on cults in Idaho.
