Washington Hall Designated as Historic Landmark

Posted by Dominic Holden on Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 6:13 PM

The Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board unanimously voted to designate Washington Hall, the brick venue at 14th Avenue and Fir Street, a historic landmark, reports Bill at Central District News. Now the difficult part begins for local preservation and arts groups: restoring the roof, plumbing, walls, boiler, and other failing elements of the deteriorating building. Historic Seattle says the repairs will costs about $8 million. More on the hall is here.

That makes me profoundly happy. Now all we need is a magical bag of money to fix up the building—which is a fucking wreck; I was there last year for a story and pigeons were actively shitting through the holes in the ceiling—and give CD Forum a proper, permanent stage. It'll be On the Boards's kid brother. And then they'll produce a stack of excellent shows and we'll give them a Genius Award.

Would it take forever to study what to do? Everyone knows what needs to be fixed and how to fix it right? Work could start right away, right?

It's what you call a "turnkey" project, right? Who do we know with vast piles of money they want to spend right away on turnkey projects?...

If it wasn't for the Washington Hall, I wouldn't be posting this comment! My maternal grandparents met there in 1922. My parents fell in love there. Long before my sister, a well known actress in Seattle Theater, performed there in 1986, in the same play my mother and her mother did, in 1961 and 1936... my maternal grandparents were actors, performing there, in the 1920's. There is evidence of this in the Danish Room, at the Nordic Heritage Museum. I know the history of this building well from the time it was built, until I last visited it, in the late 1960's. God Bless Washington Hall, so much family history there and memories for Seatlle's Danish Community, and me too!

No, no, no! There is no white history in the Central District. It had always been black until the homos started moving in and began their genocide.

This is good news. The guys who run this place are good people.I'm in SSP and we had practice there for about a year.It is EXTREMELY run down.Holes in the ceiling full of pigeons.Bathrooms that barely work and back up all the time.Everything in that joint is jacked up.

I hope this building gets fixed up and is returns to it's former glory.
