I don't think barrow means what you think it does.

A barrow full of monkeys would be an ancient dirt and rock mound covered in monkeys.

This is neither.

Did somebody stuff those monkeys into the barrow, or did they climb into the barrow of their own accord?

Will in Seattle, check yourself before you mess yourself. The third definition at Merriam-Webster fits this usage. Ever heard of a wheelbarrow?

Yes, but originally (and I grew up on the OED, not the M-W) it was a wheelbarrow because you used it to move large "mounds of earth and stone", hence the linkage.

Check out the annotated version of some Chaucer works.
