Police are investigating yet another shooting after a gunman opened fire on a group of men in Pioneer Square early this morning.

Police say the group of men were walking on 1st and James when another man emerged from an alley, fired at the group and fled the scene.

Two of the victims suffered life threatening injuries but police say they are expected to survive. Another man suffered a "less serious" gunshot wound.

No arrests have been made.

Across town in the University District, officers were called to a bar in the 5500 block of University Way around 2 AM after several patrons got into a gun battle near the business.

Officers found a handgun stashed on top of a car tire and four .40 caliber shell casings in front of the bar. No one was injured or arrested.

A "less serious" gunshot wound is a gunshot wound that happens to someone else.

The worse the economy gets the worse violent crime will get. That should really be the incentive to fix the ecomony. The last thing any government should want is a bunch of angry bitter poor people with nothing to lose.

Out of curiosity, is gun violence really up in Seattle or is SLOG taking note of it more? I hate to see my hometown going all craptacular.

Nope ... the worse things get the better the neo-con position is.

People who are poor and scared don't make as much trouble. They're working too hard to pay attention to the news and are easily manipulated.

As the level of violence increases, the state is given sweeping powers of arbitrary detention and condoned violence.

We think nothing these days of a situation where authorities can confiscate personal property - requiring the owner to prove that it is not the proceed of a drug transaction.

We think nothing of story after story of the police executing no-knock warrants, killing anyone inside who offers resistance.

We think nothing of the increasingly familiar stories of officiers in street clothes leaping out of unmarked cars and assaulting people in the street.

All of this, and the rising, random violence associated with the lack of social services, mental healthcare, and the economy, serves to grind the general population into an easily-manipulated state where the most outrageous statements are accepted at face value.

I supported Obama because I saw him as the best chance to break out of this cycle - but the man sure has his work cut out for him.

Curious how the "what are the statistics of the shooters" crowd aren't out in force for a post on the gunfire at the Emmigrant. Wonder why...

I live on the 5500 block of Brooklyn Avenue, around the corner from the U-District shooting, and I think that the Emigrant needs to be shut down, period. The cops get called to that bar on an almost nightly basis. They cater to the kind of clientele that got bars like Tommy's and Sugar closed down. There have already been numerous brawls in the street after they kick out their SEVERELY OVERSERVED patrons at closing, and I knew it was only a matter of time before the situation would finally degenerate into gun violence.

That business is the epitome of a "bad neighbor" and its owners are among the most irresponsible and unscrupulous in the city. Just about everyone who lives on or around that block has wanted that place shut down for a while now.

@10

Have you complained to the liquor board and the police? Neighbor complaints are what made life hell for the Blue Moon, you know.

i'm sure hip hop music is to blame for all of this.

@11 Yes, there have been numerous complaints to the police (although not sure about the LCB). I've been told that the Emigrant is already under close scrutiny, and I wouldn't be surprised if this shooting provides the impetus to close it down.

Okay, what the fuck, Seattle? We're getting up toward one shooting a day so far this year. Is this going to continue for the remaining 11 1/2 months?

Sadly, I heard the gun battle last night and then went back to sleep since it seemed far enough away.

The Irish Emigrant? LOL. One time I fell out the sunroof of my friend's car as he pulled up to park... I slid down the windshield and fell off the hood. They didn't see that, but somehow I was sober enough to get inside. Only when I fell through one of the interior window spaces (no glass) did they tell my friends that they needed to take me out. (Even though it was a quiet night.)

Anyway, I'm surprised that the Emigrant is the new Tommy's. It seemed it had a slightly older crowd (grad-student-age) except on karaoke nights. Maybe that's just because I was 21/22 when I went there a few years back. But it definitely wasn't crowded much.

Note: the Emigrant changed ownership in the past year or so. It's gone downhill since, as can be seen via these yelp reviews:

@17 The place has changed remarkably in the last few years, due to multiple ownership changes. Trivia and karaoke nights have been replaced with hip-hop and beer pong nights, which has changed the nature of the clientele.

um, no Fremont isn't 'safe' - my friend was mugged and left for dead there about 6 months ago, there's meatheads a plenty out there.

The Emigrant is a menace. It's a completely different place than it used to be. Ownership changes turned it from a lame Bro' bar I wouldn't be caught dead in to a hazardous club that I could be killed in. They even dropped the "Irish" from the name.

I live on that block and virtually every Tuesday (dollar beer night) and Thursday (DJ night) we're treated to at least one street fight, not to mention the parade of cars burning and bassing out. Of course there's plenty of puke and trash on the sidewalks in the morning. The neighboring buildings get used as urinals and vomitoriums by the patrons.

Last night was a near riot even before the shooting. There was a huge brawl in front of the door and dozens of people running in the street. I thought to myself, "This place is the next Tommys" about 2 mintues before the first round of shots. Sucks to be right.

There are two basic problems, they over serve and they under police. Their security people are so bad that they actually instigated a snowball fight with the Galway during Snowpocalypse and kept it going while the Galway bartender was yelling for them to knock it off. They make no attempt to break up or prevent fights, just as long as they aren't blocking the entrance.

Anyways, I'm filing a complaint with the Liquor Control Board and anyone else that will listen. If anyone else on the block is sick of them too and would like to help get them run out of town, drop me an email at DeportTheEmigrant@gmail.com.

I think the one dollar caronas are worth the effort to dodge the bullets.

But honestly the Galway is across the fucking street, and the only problems that happen there are from the Emigrant people that filter in.

@24 Reminds me of the nervous dental patient who said, "Oh, doctor, sometimes I think I'd rather get raped than have a root canal..."

Dr. Yankem: "Well, make up your mind before I adjust the chair!"
