Reading Tonight

There's only one reading that I'm aware of tonight: the magazine Mare Nostrum, which focuses on "all things Mediterranean," is having a new issue release party at the Hugo House. There will be poets and tarot card readers and Mediterranean things like food (ham sandwiches, which don't seem very Mediterranean to me, but what do I know?) and since it's at the Hugo House, there will presumably be booze there, too. Ham and booze sound like a good time to me.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

Seriously? Ham, or "jamon," is absolutely the emblematic food of Spain. You got yer Jamon Serrano, made from normal pigs, which is the star attraction at pretty much every bar in Spain, and then you got yer legendary Jamon Iberico, made from black Iberico pigs. A bocadillo de jamon with a few slices of Manchego cheese and a glass of wine? You don't get much more Mediterranean than that.

Gurldoggie, for once we are in perfect accord. On my last trip to Spain, I would have had jamon iberico for every meal, but the girlfriend restrained me. Italians know there ham too. . .

Well, there's no suckling pig or pickled trotters at my reading: The Entire Earth and Sky: Views on Antarctica, JAN 10, 7:30 p.m. at ELLIOTT BAY BOOKS...but I would love to see my favorite books writer PAUL CONSTANT there. Good work covering the closure of SF indie bookstores. What we all need to do now is stash a fistful of dollars in pockets, throw open the front door, and go buy a book at the local indie store. Polar explorers dig books big time -- I mean, what else is there to do when you unfasten your sledge and zip into a bag? Favorite polar reads from days of yore? War and Peace and Yeats.
See you all Saturday night at Elliott Bay Books.
