What's Wrong with This Picture?

Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 3:43 PM

The same Barack Obama who can't get his tongue far enough up Rick Warren's and Joe Lieberman's asses, the same Obama tossing out $300B tax cuts to make nice with the GOP members of Congress, is shitting all over Howard Dean?

Barack Obama is set to host a press conference with incoming Democratic National Committee Chair Tim Kaine on Thursday in what will ostensibly mark the beginning of a new era for the party and the committee.

Noticeably absent from the affair will be the individual who symbolized the old regime.

Former Gov. Howard Dean is not on the list of attendees for the event, a noticeable nonattendance for someone largely credited with revitalizing the Democratic Party ranks and contributing—whether politically or through his 50-State Strategy—to major electoral gains.

It turns out that the Obama folks told Dean to stay away from the event. What the fuck?

Dan - At the event, both Obama and Kaine made it perfectly clear how valuable Howard Dean's contributions have been to the dem's success over the past 4 years. And the only support for your claim that "It turns out that the Obama folks told Dean to stay away from the event" is an anonymous source in an AP piece by Liz Sidoti, someone with a track record of screwing Obama. So what's going on here? Are you so angry about the Warren thing that you have lost your ability to see "straight"?

hmmmm. If one would go past the rather drama ridden middleman (Miss Avarosis, or whatever her name is) one would find the original article, which says

"It is unclear whether Dean's absence reflects a snub or a scheduling conflict. An Obama transition official said it was their understanding that Dean was traveling. "

But that isn't nearly as much fun, is it?

let's hope it's all media biases against dean and not an obama slight. but I too had the same exact response as dan had.

Obama and us Democrats should be thanking our lucky stars for Howard Dean!

He implemented the 50 state strategy which pretty much won us this election and helped the moral and our gains considerably across the board.

Obama isn't shitting on him, this piece of writing is shitting on him by not noting that.

It's Mr. Savage's nature that he can't stand seeing anyone burn a bridge, that's all.

Non has it.

Many people are still butt hurt and embarrassed by how wrong they were when they challenged Dean's strategy and accused him of committing our suicide when he started the 50 state strategy.

Is this Rahm Emanuel's doing, do you think? If I remember correctly, he and Dean didn't get along very well and didn't agree on the whole 50 state strategy thing...

I was at an Obama event in October that Dean spoke at -- he was pretty lackluster. I had been really looking forward to seeing him, but he was the lowlight of the day. It made me wonder whether he really supported Obama.

I meant to say, "if this is true, is it Emanuel's doing"... since I'm not convinced that it is.

Geez, you mean Obama's shit really does stink? I hadn't expected to ever hear you even casually allude to that fact.

Never forget that it was the Media that had it in for Howard Dean in the first place, endlessly replaying his attempt to be heard in a room where it was noisy and nobody could hear.

I blame the media.

Still.

CLIFFORD: My gracious liege, this too much lenity
And harmful pity must be laid aside.
To whom do lions cast their gentle looks?
Not to the beast that would usurp their den.
Whose hand is that the forest bear doth lick?
Not his that spoils her young before her face.
Who 'scapes the lurking serpent's mortal sting?
Not he that sets his foot upon her back.
The smallest worm will turn being trodden on,
And doves will peck in safeguard of their brood.

"an AP piece by Liz Sidoti, someone with a track record of screwing Obama. "

Yeah, the AP is pretty much a Conservative-run and enabling tool here, and has concern trolled progressives pretty hard for years.

"oh!! there it is, that sound again,

yep, sounds like yet another progressive being thrown under the bus."

There are plenty of good reasons to decry progressives being thrown under buses without worrying about every little GOP trick to pit us against each other.

@17:
this is not just a GOP trick, this a DNC move to tack towards the right after an election. they're more comfortable there, it's their natural habitat... the squishy middle, built upon the jetsom of idealism they don't need anymore.

In addition to Warren I am a bit concerned about Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General. Gupta has promoted the use of nonsense called faciliated communication as a valid and useful communication tool. Faciliated communication is a load of new age woo and is worthless. We had enough anti science stuff under Bush. We don't need to replace it with pseudoscience and quack medicine.

Face it: the combination of the lousy campaign to fight Prop 8 (the loss of which Dan obsessively blamed on Cali Blacks despite evidence and several reports to the contrary) combined with the personal slight (and politically nearly irrelevant) invitation of Pastor Warren to say grace at Obama Inaugalooza seems to have driven many folks in the Gay Community quite batshit insane (hopefully temporarily).

Andy its not just that, look at the whole cabinet, maybe with the exception of Labor, seriously it's not looking good for the mantra/mandate of change.

perhaps since that(change) was such a nebulous and timely term, he was great for capitalizing on it, but still all that lip service and then a 180 from it is gonna sting, and it's not just gays that are feeling that now.

poor Howard Dean. No much-deserved recognition (his 50 state strategy and internet fundraising model paved a way for Obama) and no HHS post for him.

Dean likes teh gayz too much to be welcome in Obama land. (Remember Vermont Civil Unions???) Face it, Obama would love to see us go away so he can usher some splintered off fundies into his tent. I am liking him less and less every day and am just slightly starting to regret my vote.

"look at the whole cabinet, maybe with the exception of Labor, seriously it's not looking good for the mantra/mandate of change."

Look, the only thing that's going to enable change is to oust Pelosi/Reid. Even having Bernie Sanders and Kusinch and Chomsky in Obama's cabinet won't be able to get anything done without Congress' help.

"I am liking him less and less every day and am just slightly starting to regret my vote."

Look, it looks like shit, it smells like shit, it's probably shit, but I'm giving him a year before I'm absolutely confirmed. He hasn't made a single move AS President, and I owe him that much (probably not that long, but still.)

This Republican concern-trolling all over the media is fucking terrible and I can't wait for the traditional media to fold. Even the NYT can't get enough Neocon cock in their mouth, they need more!

from#27:
"Look, the only thing that's going to enable change is to oust Pelosi/Reid."

I totally agree, maybe not right now, but soon if they don't start getting effective, ie; bring charges or at least hearings against the Bush White House and DOJ.

"Even having Bernie Sanders and Kusinch and Chomsky in Obama's cabinet won't be able to get anything done without Congress' help."

sure the senate may be a little tougher than the house, but it's not a forgone conclusion that there is any meaningful political capital left for the Republicans to use and threaten with at this point, they were given the scraps, why the hell are the big D dems and the new admin trying to throw them a bone. maybe it's about money, or a reciprical fellatio thing???

"I am liking him less and less every day and am just slightly starting to regret my vote."

Jesus, if nothing else, this election has reinforced a lot of stereotypes of gays as neurotic pansies.

So your miracle man didn't call you after your one night stand? So what? You should be used to that by now. You're still going to have to see him at the bar next Saturday night.

Roll with the fucking punches. Obama ain't your Ken doll, but he can do a whole lot to help you - if you play the game like a man. If you want to be taken seriously, just can't knock over the game board and go crying to mommy when something doesn't go exactly your way.

Amen to what @30 said.

Wanna work with the folks in the Big Leagues? Check your expectations, learn strategy, don't bolt at the first disagreement, don't cry when you don't get everything on your wish list (guess what, you won't), network network network, and work hard.

The first big test is how we're gonna deal with the (inevitable) deflation of the Great Hope Bubble.

Andy, thats some spineless right wing sympathizing appeasement tripe you are a selling, and it is even wrapped up in a "stratergerizing" tough guy bow.

I mean thats fine if the status quo and internalized oppression are your thing, then we should all stick with the Dems.

Just because they are less evil then the GOP, does not mean most Dems still wont sell you down the river at the first chance.

but ymmv.
doubtful though.

yeah, third party. Good luck with your little crusade. I mean, you have such a successful track record in the past. I can just see how the Gay Pity Party (because the rest of your platform is.......?) will play outside the nations ten biggest cities.

But it makes you feel all Mavericky, and that's what's important, right?
Posted by Frustrated fag on January 8, 2009 at 10:33 PM

the rest of the platform is one built on the affirmation of constitutional rights and are not to be used or viewed as tokens up for trade for the sake of political expediency.

it's really not all that mavericky or a "little crusade" , when you think about it; more like the kind of fair starting point that others take for granted.

the guarantee of equal opportunity and access to justice should be the baseline, and non-negotiable.

but hey, if you want to keep being sat at the kids table getting the shit end of everything, then by all means, keep going down that path with the partisan Politicians, we all know how much they care.

So, you're proposing something between the Rainbow Coalition and the Green Party? Wonderful. You'll be doing your part to ensure that the GOP returns to power and enacts even more legislation to restrict your rights, all in the name of Jesus.

It's good to know that this new movement seems to be stuck in the usual gay mode of sitting on your ass and whining. It would take a lot of hard work, leadership, and money. Three things "the community", and the nation at large, for that matter, seem to be lacking in these days.

No thanks. Go ahead and form your non-party party. I'll work for change. Because if you show up, act like an adult (another thing "the community" has trouble with) and earn a place at the table, you won't always get the "shit end of everything". It's all about knowing that it's NOT all about you, all the time.
