Shooting at Broadway and Madison

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Seattle police are looking for a shooting suspect after shots were fired near Broadway and Madison.

It appears at least one person was injured in the shooting.

Police are looking for a "transient looking" black male in his 30s-40s, dressed all in black who was seen running from the scene.

Update: Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen says one person was transported to Harborview with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which makes SPD's search for a suspect a bit puzzling.

More soon.

Update 2: Police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. It appears one shot was fired inside of a toyota Tundra parked outside of the Polyclinic on Broadway. Police still aren't sure whether the "transient" is related to the shooting.

Update 3: The injured man was taken to Harborview with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police say the shooting may have been accidental.

Update 4: SPD now believes the shooting was a suicide attempt.

Maybe the SPD was being proactive just going after what they think should be the suspect if it was not self-inflicted.

The victim/assailant (all in one!) was probably listening to hip hop. Criminal.

If I were a black dude and heard shots, I'd run for it too, knowing the FIRST THING the police would do was cuff me and ask why I did it.

They'll probably find him on a bus riding around in the Flee Ride Zone.

Greg's right.

They'd probably shoot you in the back too.

They do it all the time and then the cop never does any serious jail time.

The Polyclinic really does lame Hip-Hop nights. For one thing, they have them on a Thursday afternoon.

It's those cheap shoulder holsters that guy sells on EBay. I must know a dozen people who've plugged themselves that way.

"Transient looking black man"

Right.

Then it will turn out to be an albino making 6 figures.

If everyone involved in this incident were armed this never would have occured... Can you believe people actually think like that?

He could have been a charmingly eccentric non-Nazi history buff reenacting the final historical events Hitler's in bunker.

I'm a non-transient white male and if someone fires a gun I run away. I don't stick around on the off chance that he has shot himself and that I could possibly be of assistance to the police.

Between the Chop Suey thing happening a block away from where I live and this incident, my neighborhood is not looking so great. Darn it, stop it people!

I was actually there at this shooting prior to any aid cars coming... walking back to my car that was parked a few cars behind this truck. My first thought was that it was an accidental self-inflicted wound. I did hear another witness account of the transient running from the truck. I was coming from a different direction from this witness. The police and other aid did a tremendous job from what I could tell!
