Rachel Maddow on The Daily Show

Posted by on Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 9:53 AM

MSNBC appears to be letting Rachel wear her own clothes on her show these days—not her wonky glasses, but actual button-down shirts. Men's shirts. The "school principal look" that Maddow complained about is dead because, I guess, the suits at MSNBC suddenly realized that viewers know Maddow's a dyke and don't care.

I wasn't aware that school principles had a look to them. Or did you mean "principal"?

I don't give a fuck what she wears, Dan. I like what she says and how she says it.

The principle is your pal.

Does this mean CNN will follow suit and allow Anderson Cooper to wear A&F T-shirts, ass- hugging jeans and a coral choker?

From interviews I've read, Rachel chose the suit jacket look (with her partner's help) because she didn't want people talking about what she was wearing instead of focusing on the program's content. She may be loosening up a bit on air, but it's not because MSNBC "let" her.

OMG I just checked out her Wikipedia entry. I had no idea she did her dissertation on HIV/AIDS in prisons. I too *Swoon*.
Hopefully we'll see her pushing on-air for desprately needed syringe exchanges in prisons.

She looks like 1/2 of Drew Carey.

I know Rachel from back in the day and she always had those glasses and set my standards for lesbian fashion to this day. She's a big superstar.

Rachel Maddow is the only person reason I made it through the election with my sanity. I love her!!! Thank you Rachel! =)

I do love me some Rachel Maddow, in that special way that a gay man loves a lesbian.

Are people kidding about "swooning" over her? If people are serious, I guess it just proves there is a type of person for everyone's tastes. I am assuming the swooners are women, I can't imagine any guy I know being into that look.

I love Rachel Maddow and thought she was great and funny and all that... but how many times to I have to hear that she doesn't own a television? I feel like she's mentioned it in every interview I've seen of her...

I'm a straight guy, and I've always been attracted to women with short hair. Now, the giant glasses, that's not hot, that's cool.

Oh, really. I'm as huge a Rachel fan as one can be, but her on-TV look is SO much better than the giant glasses etc., which look like a costume and aren't flattering whatsoever. Amazing that more people can't see that.

I was thrilled when she got her show but have already grown board with it. The post-election manufactured controversies were what turned me off.

I suspect the off-show costume helps her avoid getting hounded for her celebrity on the way to the studio and back. Don't ya gotta have different drag for going out if you've seriously grabbed the star-punditry tiger by the tail?

Julie @15
I didn't know she doesn't have a TV and neither did John Stewart, it seems. You have to admit, it's an interesting fact about someone who makes a living doing a TV news show. If you are going to seek out interviews with her, you'll probably hear it a few more times. Be patient.

@ 14 - male breeder here who digs the look.

Call it a stereotype, but the short haired girls I usually meet are educated punks who don't believe in victimhood and do cool stuff with their lives. That must be hardwired to HOT in my brain.

Sometimes I feel like a fool for hitting on a lesbian, but hell - whatever sexual orientation, I've met someone cool.

women should not wear men's shirts. they should wear shirts that fit & flatter their bodies.

Thanks gender police @23. Rachel's brown (corduroy?) shirt is hot. Please focus on dressing yourself better and leave style to people with style like Rachel.

Hmm. Let's see if I've got this right. It's OK for her to go on national teevee wearing menswear, but if a guy were to wear a dress, that would be something completely radical. Pretty fucked-up world out there.

Rachel Maddow is so freakin' hot. She is physically attractive and intellectually attractive.

@14 - I am a bit more lesbian than the next guy (I know a lot of guys say that, but anyone who knows me will probably agree), but I swooned just a little.

#25 - Have you been to Capitol Hill? Every young stylish boy wears girls' jeans, girls' coats, girls' accessories, often makeup. If you stick a hairy bear in a dress he'll look silly, just like if you stick a bull dyke in a dress. There are probably more boys dressed completely completely femme than there are girls dressed completely butch.

FWIW, Rachel's off-screen wardrobe is pretty much just t-shirt, jeans, and those Ira Glass glasses. I've had a couple of opportunities to meet her in person, and she is a very genuinely friendly person.

She is totally awesome. Is she as tall as she appears? And when will she have Dan Savage on as a guest?

When she's appearing on another show in addition to her own, Rachel dresses like a dyke. YUM! Otherwise, a frumpy suit. YAWN.

Every time someone feels the need to mention that they don't a) have a TV or b) don't watch TV my opinion of them immediately drops 25% because a) it's usually not true and b) it's unbearably smug.

Also, does watching TV shows on the computer really count as "not having a TV?"

rachel looks like she's in drag on msnbc. I'm glad to hear she's wearing men's shirts. now I hope she'll ditch the eye shadow.

what a babe!

gillsans @33 - I totally agree!

One of my friends has a TV, but hardly ever watches. He is so lacking in social awareness. Everyone else peppers their conversations with references to what they see on TV. And he just sits there looking blank...

It's part of us these days.

Otherwise, I'm with the majority - I LOVE Rachel!
