It's Interesting

Posted by on Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:15 AM

That an armchair pontificator who actually shows up at city events about once a year would mock a rival paper for printing a rumor before doing 100 percent of its reporting. (Related: Do you really want to make fun of Crosscut's writers for being "long in the tooth" when your last two columns referenced Nixon, and your bio brags that you've had the same employer for 33 years?)

Come on, you deserve some mocking for that :)

Ahhh -- the ECB-Connelly love-fest rages on. Would you two just get a room and get it over with already??!!?

Well Connelly and the PI helped to spread the false rumor that Iraq was a threat to the U.S. so he should not be pointing fingers.

"Don't twang the bows!"

Funny-- Connelly using Humphrey's name to make fun of how old they are at Crosscut, since ol' Joe himself likes to name-check Warren Magnuson and Scoop Jackson all the time.

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Can't take what you give out, Erica?

No shit. What does one call a woman who has a fetish for old men?

I think all the Joel Connelly I've read from the past three years were linked via Le Stranger. Maybe we should ignore the man already, and we'll all be happy?

Connelly is right. You embarrassed yourselves on that one, as did Kos and all the others.

Hanging on Joel Connelly's every word?

What a pathetic excuse for a career you have.

I'm with Connelly on this. Burn and TAKE IT Stranger.

come on Erica-
you're understandably buttsore over the spectacle you made of yourselves,
this peevish pout of a post won't help, however.

wow, such a spanking from Grandpa Connelly.

a lot of words Connelly gave The Stranger over the idle speculation done on a blog. a speculation done in its natural habitat, I will add.

I smell a feud brewing that ain't been seen in these parts since Weekly V. Stranger feud of aught four. nice.

Bad reporters report on reporters reporting bad reports.

Jeeez, who cares if the speculation was wrong? Nobody got hurt. The Stranger reported what DID happen and did actual reporting by contacting local Democratic sources to get more information. The speculation was very interesting but never misleading. The Stranger did everything right. If anyone screwed up, it's Gregoire's staff for being vague and misleading.

Joe Connelly does do a lot more harm than Erica Barnett, that's for sure.

Personally, I'm not ready to let go of our dream of seeing Gregoire promoted out of our state. When I'm ready to let go, I'll say so, if that's all right with you, Joe Fucking Connelly.

I just do not understand what the big deal is about Eli and ECB's speculation being off the mark. The news is filled with speculation! Will Hillary be VP? Will Gupta be named Surgeon General? So they guessed wrong about Gregoire! Who cares!

"So they guessed wrong about Gregoire! Who cares!"

You are missing the point.

Had the Times/PI/Crosscut/Weekly/Etc. been so terribly wrong in their speculation I'm sure we'd be hearing about it relentlessly on SLOG in BOLDFACE TYPE TOO!

Completely agree on 25.

This was not a real good example of quality Journalism. I'd expect this to have come from a high school paper.

Slog loves to crap all over other papers when they screw up. But turnabout? That just isn't fair!

Really, your (and especially Eli's) whining is downright embarrassing.

Oh, and @14: Thanks for the comment, Eli's mom.

Wow, ECB manages to be both sophomoric (actually, make that infantile) and ageist in the same post.

Throw in the projection and denial and you've gone one better than a mere hat trick of shoddy journalism.

All the blogs that picked up on the Stranger's speculation knew it was speculation, and they decided with open eyes they wanted to participate in that. Why? Because that's what blog readers want.

Not everyone over 50 who looks at blogs fails to understand the difference between printing a story in newspaper and having some fun wildly speculating on a blog. There is, naturally, a correlation between age and failure to understand new media, and maybe saying so makes you ageist. So be it. Maybe their mouths don't work well, OK?

The key fact is that this Slog never asserted that it was anything other than speculation, and didn't pretend it was based on any evidence other than what little was known.

Unlike the time Josh Feit jumped the shark on the Slog and claimed you can get away with anything because it's a blog. You still have to distinguish between speculation and fact, and Dan and Eli did that much.
