The First Swearings In

Posted by on Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 9:03 AM

You can watch the swearing in of the 111th Congress live on C-Span here.

UPDATE: A man in black is saying, "Lord, we praise you as the father of us all..." as everyone in the House has their heads bowed.

Senator Burris has been turned away from his rightful place as a Senator. This is an outrage!

"Lord, we praise you as the father of us all..."
Did they just flaunt the constitution on live television?
I'm shocked!

The Democrats are mismanaging this congress and we are not seeing change.

1. No senator from NY yet, why the delay? Get on with it. We need every vote.
2. Burris: no legal grounds to reject him. How about following the law, and seating him? We need every vote.
3. Franken: easier to seat if Democrats stop adopting the ridiculous antiaction rules of Senate that give ANY senator the right to block action unilaterally, requiring the stupid 60 votes to overcome that (well they've been adopting the no=action rules for CENTURIES. you don't expect things to CHANGE, do you?)
4. Local democrats having all their meetings now, ignored on Slog, to elect the people who make the rules including superdelegates, etc. etc. No grass roots activism going on to change anything.
5. Obama vast e mail network lying dormant, a wasted asset, should be activiated to support his stimulus program -- instead of his strategy of trying to get a really braod coalition, which means watering down the change inherent in his plan.
The new politics of change, it seems, is massive triangulation.
6. Panetta is good pick, he's anti torture, a fight worth having. Pelosi: shut up and get on board.

At what point might the Democratic Congress realize that Pelosi/Reid are feckless twits with lower numbers than the Bushies and decide to call for new leadership? The midterms?
