That'll Learn 'Em

Posted by Dominic Holden on Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 11:16 AM

Great investigative work in El Paso, Texas led police to break up a teenage drug gang:

Police crash a motel party in northeast El Paso and arrest eight people with pot, officials said. Police investigators said the smell of pot led officers to the room where the party was being held at the Colonial Motor Motel, which is located at 8709 Dyer. Inside the room, they found alcoholic beverages and 40 grams of marijuana.

Lest the penal culture of Texas jails go easy on the teenagers, the local ABC affiliate, KVIA, has posted all of the teens' wide-eyed photos online.

What, no towels in the room?

Lock em up.

No loss to anyone.

Hoods and skanks one and all.

If they ever did find any ambition, the best we could probably hope for out of them would be for them to shoot up a Hip Hop (or Mariachi) Night somewhere.

Ahh Texas. I think I'd rather be in prison than live there. I'm not certain, but I think these kids may actually have more knowledge and culture once they're out of jail than they'd have gotten otherwise in that backwards shit hole of a state.

Give us a break, #2. Your Hip Hop/Mariachi reference is offensive.

In the past, I've been to more Seattle rave-scene parties with a lot more than just the 40 grams of pot going on (I even met some guy named Dominic at one, once).

Isn't there some media rule about releasing the information of minors?

Wait, one of those kids is clearly white, so this isn't a gang. Well, maybe it was a gang meeting with an outside investor, or they kept him hostage?

Why is it that in a country where the english system of weights and measures is the norm, amounds of pot are stated in grams? I thought it was supposed to unamerican to use the metric system. These cops must be french loving, quran reading, lefty communist pedophiles or something. Who else would use grams when they could use good old US ounces?

That'll teach those two white kids to do drugs with swarthy peoples!

Remember, white teenagers: only smoke drugs with your own kind!

@ 3: Cultureless? Ever heard of a little place called Austin or its music and arts festival, SXSW, that seems to draw each and every band and music critic worth anything in this town?

Did anyone else observe that none of them look obviously drunk or stoned in their mugshots? Maybe they were just getting their party started. Or maybe the cops' line about the smell is bullshit and someone narced on them. Or more likely it's due to that shitty shwag that gets brought across the border and kids in El Paso tragically get stuck smoking.

@13: Yes, Austin is a hip city. But it's one city, in a state with a (legal and counted) population pushing 25 million. I lived in Texas for 12 years and there are plenty of people there that I love dearly. But denying that Texas is by and large a "backwards shit hole of a state" is like, well, like denying Utah is a backwards shit hole of a state.

@13. Yes, cultureless. Defending Texas with Austin, is like defending Ed Gein with his taste in art. Let's just say if a state were to be hit with an asteroid tomorrow, Austin is a fair sacrifice to remove that blight from our union.

@14. Crap, thanks for reminding me about Utah. I kinda forgot it for a minute there. Maybe Texas isn't the bottom of the barrel around here. I'll have to think long and hard about my asteroid trajectory now. Dammit.

@16: Texas is a way better target. There are far more people (read: electoral votes), and almost all of them suck just as bad as Mormons. Just let me make a few phone calls and get about 15 people airlifted out first.

p.s. Yes, fantasizing about the destruction of people who disagree with me makes me a monster. But that's what living in Texas does to a person.

(Plus I'm kidding. Most of them, however, would not be.)

@9 - because 40 sounds like a lot more than one and a half.

Legalize it.
