'Helvetica' Airing Tonight

Posted by Gillian Anderson on Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 4:49 PM

The film Helvetica is showing tonight on Independent Lens at 10:00 p.m. on channel 9.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which recently celebrated its 50th birthday) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

Add me to those who inquire: Will there be a mention of Helvetica Bold, Dan Savage's drag queen character? What about Helvetica Italic, Dan's ethnic comedian character?

I really enjoyed the film. I dragged my then boyfriend along, thoguh he swore it sounded horridly boring, but he wound up really loving it as well.

So don't judge the film on it's odd subject.

Big hit at last last year's Hot Docs fest here. Go see it! It's fun and light.

The movie seems to want to convince the viewer that sans serif fonts were something new and amazing in the 1960s, but I was reading a copy of the Washington Post from 1901 yesterday and there were ads all over the place in a typeface virtually indistinguishable from Helvetica. The movie's basic thesis has a fundamentally flawed premise.

So, has anyone seen the prequel, Times Roman?

This is such a strange movie. There's one guy who is WAY too enthusiastic about the font itself, which is kind of uncomfortable to watch.
