Your comment on the Sri Lankan conflict is misleading. 70,000 people have died over the last 25 years. It's still horrible, but didn't just happen overnight.

This initiative deserves consideration. People that complain about property taxes are not just the rich. If you're on a fixed income like the retired and elderly, coming up with $5K or so for taxes on your modest two bedroom each year is indeed a hardship.

If the Democrats ever did stuff to make govt. more efficient, or to reduce property taxes when people read that their house values are dropping like a stone, maybe Eyman and the GOP wouldn't be able to fill the void and convince people that govt. itself is always just immoral theft.

Tim Eyman is one of the few voices of reason left in this leftist wilderness. He wouldn't need to file all of these anti-tax initiatives had true traditionalist tax cutting patriots like Ellen Craswel John Carlson, or Dino Rossi been elected.

It sounds like the $75K is to be taken out of any award given to the mauling victim, which seems right to me. I mean, wouldn 't that be part of the purpose of awarding damages in this case - covering medical expenses?

yeah -- even when i was in an accident (me on motorcycle vs. uninsured, suspended license camero driver), my medical insurance paid my bills, but my rep told me that in any settlement i agreed to make sure i remembered i had to pay my medical bills back first. i think that's common practice. (didn't matter, though, as i didn't get any money at all for medical, my bike, or anything.) and yeah, in this case, those kids were kind of at fault, as i recall.

making a regressive tax smaller in a regressive manner doesn't really make it less regressive. it might make the burden less, though, which is how tim is selling this. the people who will sign just need a justification so they can feel good about what they really want: to pay less taxes themselves. there are better ways to help out elderly folks struggling to pay their tax bills, better ways to minimize tax spending during a recession, and frankly, better ways to keep property taxes in check than this measure.

I was under the impression that retired folk have special tax exemption for values under a certain amount. I could be wrong.

My skepticism meter went off the charts from the first line, where you claim the Dems won 20 states (actually 28, but why quibble over numbers?). It only goes downhill from there.
