You're Welcome

Posted by on Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Here's your first galling dose of FOX News for 2009. (Watch the running news ticker at the bottom of the screen, which was reportedly posting New Year's messages from viewers.)

(Thanks for the heads up, Towleroad.)

"Magic Negro" Are they referring to Casper, one of the Three Magi that visited the Christ Child? Casper was reported to have been a Negro. I can only conclude that is who is being spoken of.

Does anyone watch Fox News anymore?

I mean, seriously, they lost and nobody cares about them. They should just pack up and go home to Paraguay.

"Magic Negro" is quickly becoming the passphrase to identify the people who are being pushed aside, even by the Republicans. The nothing people, the last-century neocon losers whom no one is going to pay attention to ever again. They don't realize it, but we're choosing up sides right now, and they're with the permanent losers. Conservatism may or may not have a future in America, but NOT WITH THEM.

"Magic Negro" was coined by a staff writer at the L.A. Times in regard to Al Sharpton not thinking that Obama was black enough.

to paraphrase wikipedia (yes, i am that lazy)
"magical negro" was a term that was common in hollywood from the 50s on to describe a character in a film who was black and who was basicaly a savant - they gave spiritual and emotional insight to the white charaters, but stayed peripheral characters. Spike Lee popularized the term in the 90s at some college talk he was giving. i just wrote a paper for my grad school applications and some of it touched on whether Rickie Vasquez played the role of "magical negro" in My So-Called Life. In case you were wondering about my grad school apps, "like, or whatever"

Oh quit your whining! There are more important issues to be concerned about than a stupid song. Grow up, calm down, and don't be so oversensitive.

Mark in Colorado: Oh quit your whining! There are more important issues to be concerned about than a stupid blog post! Grow up, calm down, and don't be so oversensitive.

Also, the hubbub here has nothing to with "a song"—it has to do with a news report.

Thanks for playing, please try again.

The KKK certainly thanks, you boys, for your apathy and for your neighborly help in silencing the uppity voice of opposition.

Hey, Mark, how many crucifixes were burned outside your parent's house when they were children? Any of your relatives ever been lynched? Ever been detained or arrested just because of the color of your skin? Was your great-grandmother raped and left for dead by a pack of racist bastards?

No? ...then shut the fuck up, asshole. (hope that doesn't way too heavy on your delicate constitution, boy)

A "stupid song" gains meaning in context of a life you've never led. You don't have the right to speak about things you don't understand.

There are more important issues to be concerned about than some words on a ticker of a New Year's Eve telecast by FOX. Grow up, calm down, and don't be so oversensitive.

Better?! Now, quit your whining.

I'm filing an INDECENCY COMPLAINT WITH THE FCC and anyone else offended by that ticket message should too. Quit whining is right -- It's time to resolve to fight back.

@14:
Oh no, here we go with the "my oppression is worse than yours." I'm not intimidated by the one-upsmanship tactics of any minority group. Perhaps you could learn from Obama and move on in a more constructive and meaningful way.

You're half right. I'm a bastard and a proud one at that.
That damn first amendment though. If we could only repeal it so that only those who believe they have the right to speak on something can silence those who are believed to be ignorant of some "truth." This Mexican-American likes the Constitution and the 1st Amendment just the way they are thank you.

You mistake freedom of speech for freedom from reproach. The U.S. Constitution grants its citizens the former, but not the later. Your ass will cash the check your mouth writes.

In your hasty response, you appear to have forgotten that it was you who insisted that those who opposed the blatant racism in this song simply shut the fuck up and accept the racist attack. Read your own comments. My response addresses your attempt to control and to silence those with whom you disagree.

While your reaction is proof that on some level you’ve comprehended the lesson that I’ve attempted to impart by mirroring and amplifying your behavior, you still appear not to have grasped the full measure of the lesson, though.

It’s a simple concept of reciprocity. Perhaps, you’ve heard of this “golden rule.”

For me to be silent in the face of such profound arrogance and ignorance would be consent.

I will not, sir.

Okay, so let's see if I've got the lesson:
Mirroring:
"You don't have the right to speak about things you don't understand."--Southern Voice
Profound arrogance:
"...the lesson that I’ve attempted to impart by mirroring and amplifying your behavior, you still appear not to have grasped the full measure of the lesson, though."--Southern Voice
This bastard was addressing your holier than thou rantings of oppression and how that makes you, and others like you presumably, solely qualified to speak on such subjects as racist language in a broader context.
And I still hold that there are more important things to be concerned about. I guess I'm just not as fragile as you. Someone calls me or my kind a spic, bean, etc. it just doesn't register as important to me. As such, I don't find your placing such importance on this matter (regardless of historical or contemporary context) compelling. At some point you should consider not playing the victim. Obama has, why can't you?

People keep bringing up freedom of speech (just a little here, but more elsewhere), yet it's not as if FOX was making some brave statement about it. They used moderators. The issue for me isn't freedom of speech, but that if they were going to restrict speech, how the hell did this make it through?

I could see if they only restricted speech that is a direct threat to another person. No death threats from stalkers, etc. But they obviously had more stringent rules. I haven't heard anything about the ticker running "Brandi, I want to fuck you like an animal. Love, Thad." And you know some happy drunk would've requested something to that effect if it were an option. So if obscenities and blatant sexual overtures weren't permissible, why a racial slur? It’s a weird way to prioritize your censorship. "Fuck" is a far less loaded word.

The Klan doesn't burn crucifixes, they burn crosses. A crucifix is a cross that has a representation of Jesus on it. A cross is just two pieces of wood.

Just FYI.

Mark...

Basic or, perhaps, astute observation would conclude that I'm no victim in this conversation; in fact, a wiser man might see in this exchange that you may have unwittingly been made one.

In every opportunity that life provides we may be the teacher, the student or the lesson. Sometimes, we may have the fortune or misfortune of being more than one or all three.

In this situation which are you?

In the absence of abstract thought one is left with little more than a dim view of the patch of earth beneath one's feet. Consider the narrow view of the singular perspective you espouse. What does it lose in what it may gain?

Consider the apparent contradiction of your words and behavior in this simple exchange. While you insist that others respond with apathy to a racist rant set to melody, how apathetic are you to words that offend? While you proclaim your own right to speak when told to be silent you continue to insist that others remain silent in the face of oppressive speech. When you instruct others to do as you say, but not as you do the only revelation is your hypocrisy.

You are tiresome, troublesome imp. Lesson over.

We, the players, thank you for the opportunity to hone our craft.

anon @25...

Thank you for the vocabulary lesson, but a history lesson might prove more enlightening.

You appear to have missed the forest for the trees...or simply the symbol for the timbers.

Nothing RACIST or INDECENT here folks,
move along . . .
Get with the New World Order, Seattle liberals.
The phrase was coined and used by Negroes.
In a colorblind society if it is OK for Negroes to use the terminology then it is OK for anyone. Electing a (half)black President liberates us from the double standards.
