MEDIA ALERT — MEDIA ALERT — MEDIA ALERT

'TRAPPED' PETA MEMBERS ASK SEATTLE SHOPPERS TO GET A FEEL FOR FUR

Dripping in 'Blood,' Activists Will Show That Fur Belongs Only on Its Original Owners

What: Lying in pools of "blood" and with their bare legs caught in giant traps, three fur-clad PETA members will protest at Westlake Center on Monday. Their point? That if fur-wearers got a taste of what happens to animals who are trapped or raised for fur, they might think twice about draping themselves in pelts.

Animals trapped for fur suffer excruciating pain before they are bludgeoned or stomped to death by trappers. Animals raised on fur farms go insane from being confined to tiny, filthy cages in all weather extremes before they are electrocuted, poisoned, gassed, or have their necks broken. An undercover investigation in China—now the world's leading fur exporter—revealed that animals, including cats and dogs, are often skinned alive.

"The true feel of fur is pain and death," says PETA campaigner Kristina Addington. "With so many warm and fashionable alternatives available, there's no excuse to wear fur."

Where: Westlake Center, corner of Pine and Fourth streets, Seattle

When: Monday, January 5, 12 noon

Broadcast-quality footage of animals killed for fur is available.

At first I thought the people were covered with chocolate syrup... mmm, yummy.

PETA is more about sex than it is about animal rights. They should just merge with American Apparel and be done with it.

It looks like the Manson Family has crashed a white party.

I still don't get this "including cats and dogs." So PETA acknowledges that some animals' well-being is more important than others?

At least I'm an equal-opportunity carnivore -- if it's lived and loved, I'll eat it.

Will they be nude? I only pay attention to PETA protests when nudity is involved.

Ahhhh, heavy-handed performance art.... Thanks, 60's and 70's art world!

As if people don't know that fur comes from animals.

China is the leading fur supplier... That's gotta be the most un-PC country that's ever existed.

Would they be upset if I went down and ejaculated over them, do you think?

@4 - Perhaps PETA is just acknowledging that most Americans find it more egregious to kill a dog for fur than to kill a mink. The organization may not believe that, but if they can exploit it to get people to be less comfortable with fur, then more power to them.

@4 - They acknowledge that most people respond more strongly to the idea of cats and dogs being abused than weasels or ferrets. Like it or not, most humans do feel that "some animals' well-being is more important than others," and it would be ridiculous to pretend this wasn't the case.

@4 No, they're bringing to light that freakin' dogs and cats are skinned for fur. It's likely not common knowledge to the average American that Fido and Fluffy get skinned, so bringing up this little fact brings it all closer to home.

@7 Christ, you people are making me feel like a PETA supporter. They're not trying to inform people that fur comes from animals, retard, they're bringing attention to the fact that the animals raised for fur are raised in deplorable conditions and are executed horrifically. I mean, really, whatever your stance on meat and fur are (pro meat, neutral fur for me), how can you not think that it's beyond the pale to skin the fucking things ALIVE?

@10, anything for publicity, Fnarf! Sounds like a win-win.

Thank you Xtian for your response to @7. (And fifty bucks says your impromptu screed is twenty times more coherent and informative than whatever goes down at Westlake Center...)

It's the suffering aspect I simply cannot tolerate. Farm raised, with compassionate care, and painless death, I can at least, accept. But cruelty and suffering, especially for profit, is inhuman. (or is it another horrible aspect of humans?)

@5 for the insightful win.

@11, 12, 14: No, you're certainly right that people do have this instinct, and I'm pretty aware of it. But I guess what I was trying to say is that I don't understand it, and that I find it hypocritical of fur activists, who seem to be all about morality and compassion, will still mete it out according to a ranking system.

But Julie in Chicago, you make a good point; as long as it stops all animals from unnecessary suffering, it's really an unimportant detail. But it's sad that people have to rely on vague instincts rather than rationale when it comes to something as important as life.

Plants are life. Our "rationale" for protecting each other's (human) life is just a vague instinct itself. Don't knock 'em.

So can we ban all imports of everything from both Koreas and China then?

Yeah, sure you will. You'll still shop at WallyMart and doom America even though you know they still cook dogs and use their fur for clothing.

@ 14: Howzabout those leather shoes and that belt you have on?

PETA is made up of insane individuals who'd have us all naked and vegan.

PETA once forced me to watch broadcast-quality films of animals killed for food use, then vegetable and grain harvests, and finally some people fishing from a pier.

Anybody who thinks this is a joke should go to PETA's website and view some of the hidden camera video tapes of animals being slaughtered. You'll especially appreciate the footage from the docks of China of dogs and cats (still alive), stuffed into wire cages on their to the slaughter house.

@26: The lax regulatory environment in China has also resulted in products made from inhumanely-imprisoned humans ending up on U.S. shelves. Not that PETA would be concerned with something like that, given their preoccupation with educating the public about the unspeakable horrors of shrimp scampi and beekeeping.

What a perfect day to go buy a giant fur coat and enjoy a long lunch in front of the westlake mall.

I have no idea what they're trying to accomplish, they only people left buying fur don't give a shit.

So, if Fnarf watches animal torture porn from PETA, how is that better than if he buys it from Red Hot Video?

Do you really want to see LOCAL PETA supporters nude?

It's ok when models in NYC do it; not so ok when it's fat hysterical hippies and emaciated vegans who don't bathe...

After 13 years in Alaska I'm starting to seriously want a fur coat. With all of the horrors taking place globally, I've kind of stopped caring about the animals.

Shouldn't this protest be scheduled for better weather? I know snowpocolypse is over but it's still pretty chilly to be outside naked.

Wow, I thought intelligent people read The Stranger. Apparently not since hardly any of you seem to realize that animals have at least as much intelligence as small human children (of course that is an anthropocentric view of intelligence) and yet you brag about being omnivorous? Would you murder innocent human children? I doubt it. Therefore you are practitioners of speciesism. Your bias towards the human species is apparent and your hypocrisy should make you feel ashamed.
