John Travolta...

Posted by David Schmader on Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 1:20 PM

...is a movie star, and a celebrity Scientologist, and, as we'll be hearing a lot over the next few days, the father of a newly dead son.

Condolences, RIP, and all the other stuff you're supposed to say when you're sad for someone you don't know in real life.

He would, as a Scientologist, deny modern rational medical evaluation of a patient

"There have been reports that Jett was autistic, though Travolta has denied it"

What sayest the sci-fi bible...do the space ships pick up dead retards?

That's sad, I mean, Travolta was a scientologist (I've heard an even higher level phaeton or whatever than Crazy Cruise) but at least he didn't seem like a jerk. He seemed to mostly keep to himself. It's just sad.

Kawasaki syndrome???

this is an awful tragedy, and yet i'm looking forward to the complicity-of-scientology's-anti-modern-medicine angle that [i hope] will get a lot of press over the next couple weeks.

When John Travolta got a DUI in 1985 he had to speak to my high school as part of his public service. He is a very funny guy.

I was going to say something about Thetans earlier, and then realized it's just plain sad and I should STFU and let you guys say it.

There's been stories around for years that Travolta has wanted to leave Scientology but they've got the goods on him and blackmail him to stay in the fold but he won't do much to promote them like Cruise and Company.

Which would explain why they seem to have so many closety members...

Still, what a shitty, shitty thing to happen to anyone regardless if you're rich and famous or not.

unconfirmed reports state that he was indeed wearing a Nazi uniform at the time of death.

@10: It's unsympathetic to call someone "a very funny guy"?

I'm sad. This is obviously going to make it more difficult for those of us pushing for Battlefield: Earth 2 to come out.

So many gays are outraged by the dismissive concept of "love the sinner, hate the sin"; but where alleged gay Scientologists are involved (e.g. Travolta, Cruise), they fail to practice "love the believer, hate the belief system" and Babylon as if somehow Scientologists have personally fucked up their lives.

"Condolences, RIP, and all the other stuff you're supposed to say when you're sad for someone you don't know in real life."

Not likely to appear on any Hallmark Sympathy cards in the near or distant future.

what a shame if this boy died because of his parents beliefs. Anyone as sick as him should be treated and medicated by a real doctor.

@23. thank you. you know, if we can't just say condolences at such a sad loss, without the smirk - then say nothing. i sincerely doubt that the travoltas will read any of this, but the rest of us do. can't we remember that when nothing is sacred, then nothing is sacred. i'm so sad for that family that i cried. the loss of anyone is dreadful, but the loss of a child is beyond heartbreaking. can't that be sacred? maybe? huh? too much to ask these days? sad ...

Condolences - Its little wonder they shunned 'modern' medicine - until you have dealt with someone on Depakote you don't realize how badly the pharmacy has run amiss. Depakote is very expensive and causes significant personality changes,(Horrible, from personal experience with a loved one.) Older medicines are less expensive and may have lesser side effects but are not 'promoted' with free lunches and 'gifts' to the doctors.
Perhaps the focus should be on fixing the medical system so that people are not driven from it, and the misfortune of someone famous might serve a larger good.
Until you have dealt with a brain seizure in someone close to you, its hard to imagine the emotional toll. I wish them the best rich or poor, famous or not.
