I think white chocolate on its own is terrible. In combination with other things (in a dessert or baked good), it can be very tasty.
I would add to your list "nasty milk chocolate made with vegetable oil". I was given a chocolate Santa for Christmas made of that stuff -- I would definitely rather eat a crayon than that bullshit.

Good quality white chocolate is soft and melty. Cheap crap (the white chocolate equivalent of the milk chocolate Julie's talking about) is waxy and gross.

Why does everything you don't personally have a taste for have to be wrong and bad? What has happened to The Stranger? It used to be you could read reviews of movies or food or single speed bicycles or whatever and it was just someone giving an informed opinion.
Now it's like, my way or the highway. Remember when the yearly regrets issue wasn't all defensive? I remember. Is this the legacy of George W. Bush? What happened to you guys?
More proof that no one at the Stranger has any taste in candy. cf. earlier discussion about how they love Almond Roca and salt caramels and hate Aplets & Cotlets and Frangos.
White chocolate wouldn't offend me so seriously if it didn't have the gall to call itself "chocolate." If they called it anything else--make up a new word for all I care--I could maybe forgive it. But when you're a five-year-old given a piece of white and told it's chocolate, you're bound to carry a resentment for the rest of your life as soon as you bite into it.

Carob is delicious, and has about half the calories per ounce of chocolate even before you add the sugar and dairy that makes up most chocolate treats. Crayons have too much saturated fat.

@12: I don't recall anyone saying they hate Frangos. The issue was that Frangos didn't originate in Washington. Aplets and Cotlets, otoh...there was a resounding "blech."

Some white chocolate (the good stuff) actually contains cocoa butter and real vanilla. It's some good good stuff.
Carob's a different taste. If you don't come to it with the requirement that it "should" taste like chocolate, then it can taste pretty decent on its own terms. (It's no substitute for chocolate, that's for sure)
When I found out that crayons all taste the same - like wax - no matter what color they are, I was crushed. I was done with crayons and moved on to markers.
