Reading Tonight

Posted by Paul Constant on Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:12 AM

bartleby.preview.jpgHappy New Year, everyone. There are no readings tonight.

Instead, you should read Bartleby the Scrivener, by Herman Melville. Even if you haven't been able to get through Moby Dick, you should like this one. It's a lot of fun, and it says something that's still very relevant about office life.

Also, the Crispin Glover movie of the short story is awesome.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

I would prefer not to.

Didn't like the film myself. I felt Crispin Glover was overthinking it. He talked to slow. I always imagined Bartleby saying very matter-of-factly "I prefer not to" rather than rolling it on his tongue for a bit.

Wow, really? I never though I would see anyone recommending Bartleby the Scrivener (the short story OR the film). I thought both were particularly awful. The movie is almost painful to watch.
