Reading Tonight

Posted by on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 10:21 AM

150px-Lady_Audleys_Secret_Cover.jpgThere are no readings tonight.

Instead, I suggest you go read Lady Audley's Secret, by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She was the most popular female novelist of Dickens' time, and she wrote 80 novels, most of which are out of print.

Braddon was a sensationalist, and Audley's has bigamy and a hint or two of—gasp!—lesbianism. It's a lot of fun, as is another of her novels, The Trail of the Serpent, which is about an evil, murderous orphan and a deaf detective on his trail.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

While you're in the neighborhood, take a look at Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone, or The Woman in White. Both are quite satisfying reads.

For me, though, The Barchester Novels by Anthony Trollope beat them all, Dickens included.
