In what were thought his first comments since tension rose, Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said the focus should be on "peace and security in the region".

...Gen Kayani's comments were carried in an army statement linked to his meeting with visiting Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei.

The general's comments made no direct reference to India but analysts said they were an attempt to ease the atmosphere.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who also met Mr He, said Islamabad wanted "de-escalation of tensions with India and hoped that these sentiments would be reciprocated by the Indian leadership".

The BBC's Charles Haviland in Islamabad says Pakistan and China are close friends and Beijing's aim in sending Mr He as a special envoy to Islamabad is to help defuse the tension between India and Pakistan.

And where is America in all of this? What role is it playing in probably the most dangerous situation of our moment? Can the world even survive the little that remains of the Bush years? It's a gloomy end to a gloomy year.

Actually, it's none of America's fucking business. If we stick our nose in it, it's gonna get worse.

Wait until someone with some sense gets into office. Right now with who we have, it's a massive fuckup waiting to happen. Ask them if they can put it on hold until the 21st of January.

India is ramping up its nuclear program apparently saying something along the lines of "there will be a role for every vendor to play, the scope of this project is so large that no one vendor or group of vendors can possibly supply all the materials we will need." The west has wholeheartedly embraced the expansion of India's Nuclear program without question since its clearly a better option than burning coal, especially considering their current rate of growth, but our support of their nuclear expansion is a singular phenomenon and I think Pakistan has identified this double standard as a threat to their national security.
