The Morning News

eartha_kitt.jpgEartha Kitt: "The most exciting woman in the world" is dead at 81.

She said she didn't care to remove her sunglasses because it was still early in the day. It was around 1:30 in the afternoon. A waiter came over and took the poodles away, delivering them to Kitt's suite upstairs. She had a gig going at the Carlyle, and most of the shows were sold out.

The next 90 minutes were unforgettable. There were stories of men she had conquered (Sammy Davis Jr. among them), foreign lands she had traveled to, songs she had sung. I remember what she ordered because I held on to the receipt for years to show to people: salmon, asparagus, white wine, two glasses, which turned into three glasses. I wanted to cry every time I saw her motioning for the waiter: "Water, please, and bottled." But every other minute brought forth some delicious revelation, a tale of a child born in South Carolina to sharecropper parents and who forced the entertainment world to take notice of her.

Satan Clause: Man dressed in Santa suit kills ex wife, a child and six others before setting the house on fire using a "bizarre homemade device" and then killing himself.

Sixteen Times More Popular Than the Pope: Barack Obama is the most admired man in America. Hillary is the most admired woman, more than six times more popular than Michelle Obama.

Connelly: Is still talking about the city’s storm response.

Alaska Airlines: Seven workers sprayed with de-icing fluid at Sea-Tac sent to the hospital.

Pill Poppers: Illicit drugs down and pharmaceutical opiates are up in Washington.

Harold Pinter: Playwright dead at 78.

Obama number 1? I knew america was homophobic, but seriously?

And that Hillary Clinton, she's even worse to gay people.

RIP Eartha Kitt. I was lucky to see her several times at Jazz Alley. A true class act. They don't make 'em like her anymore.

I'm wondering if it's not the Stranger that's a bit out of touch in terms of the city's snow response. I think the PI is onto something, and the grumbling about the poor response is far and wide. Editorializing about the response is one thing, but I think the extent to which the city's response may or may not have been quite weak is a legitimate and important conversation to have. Count me among those who think that the primary function of a city and its property taxes is to maintain a functioning infrastructure of roads, sidewalks, power lines so that everything a city is about can function.

The Connelly thing is great - when he gets on a high horse he drops cliches like little farts.

Shouldn't that have read:

Fuck, I can see Connelly's point, to a degree. The response was certianly not the "B" that the mayor gave it, I think it was closer to a "D" and since we are going to be getting more of these sort of storms in the future we need to pull our heads out and start to have a serious discussion of what we need to change.

Ability to convert dump trucks to plow trucks? Could be an idea, certianly using sand more and plowing around the clock should be an option.

AJ @ 1,

It's most notable that Barack Obama replaces George W Bush as the most admired man in America, apparently even after he's led us into total financial, legal and moral collapse.

Take a look at some of the other names on the list. A better title for it would be "People Most Americans Have Heard Of."

@12 - And it is a USA Today poll. USA Today is the newspaper for people who hate reading the news.

Other news:

Caroline Kennedy worth over $100 million, including trust money from her grandad, Joe, her inheritance from her bro and her mom (including a chunk of Martha's Vineyard worth up to $75 million. Who knew, she's a vintner, too!)

And the Gov's folks been letting on that he's not appreciative of her folks trying to box him in on this. Plus, she still won't answer questions to the press.

IT's too bad, really. Had she done a bit more in public life, if she had frankly come forward and said yes I'm unusually rich but I will be open with you now, had she started doing 100 townhalls across upstate, creating meganews for a few weeks, opening herself up, inevitably stumbling and suffering comparisons with Palin, yet showing she's trying, she's working, telling a few of those JFK and Macaroni stories my God we'd probably all fall in love with her.

Of course, this pathway is always open to her, you know, to run for the gig.
It would help the D's nationally to keep that Kennedy brand name part of the team. She just has to go about it better.

Oh and ditch the Vineyard estate, at least lower yourself to getting a place in the Hamptons. Some of them are very nice and are only $15 million!

PC, maybe we need new people in politics? You know, try to make our political leaders rise in something that resembles a meritocracy in some way.

The Roosevelts left public life and see how that has worked out for America? Wait....never mind.
