"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

While I can't stand the fucking pope....you can't fault someone who was forced into the Hitler Youth. It was a a totalitarian state. You know, 1984 and all that. Everyone was in the Hitler Youth.

@2 First the Pope WAS a member of the Hitler Youth and shot at the Allies. It's a fact, check it out.

@2 wrong. In the mid 30's all other youth organizations were forcibly merged with Hitler youth.
By 1939, membership was mandatory for all boys even if their parents objected. By 1940 it had over 8 million members. So yes almost all kids in Nazi Germany were in the Hitler Youth.

It's the same church that hates scientific/astronomical discoveries, as soon as it catches up to the realities of humanity, it will think about apologizing. Maybe. About 200 years after the fact, of course.

I know this may sound really bad, but I really don't know whether I'll be sad or glad when there is a new Pope again. That will depend on who the next Pope is.
What's funny is that the majority of Catholics I know, really don't agree with him at all on this issue. I mean look at Joe Biden and the Kennedy Family as an example. Also two predominantly Catholic countries in Europe: Spain and Belgium have already legalised marriage equality with the majority of the population in both, approving. This is in addition to the predominantly Catholic Quebec.
I really don't know, I honestly think that most Catholics really don't believe their "leader" at all. I actually think that, at least in America, Catholics are probably more tolerant of gay people than most protestants. (Maybe because Catholics themselves are a minority in the US?)

Perhaps for people who think when they die they go someplace really awesome policing other people's sexual behavior seems as pressing and important as working for the continued survival of the human species. For everybody else, endlessly arguing about what people ought to be doing with their genitals while the world burns down seems counterproductive.

And the terrible thing is, when things like this are revealed the first thing I think is that the Prez-elect could easily have the Pope over for dinner, speak with him about their strong disagreements, establish common ground somehow, and go from there. I have this awful awareness of being much too small to offer more than spittle where the Pope's concerned.

What mankind needs protection from is fucking religion. People need reminding of the parade of perverted popes and priests over the last two thousand years. An intrinsically disordered, delusional, and murderous religion shouldn't be giving anyone advice about how to run their lives. He's pissed because he and Bush wouldn't sign onto the U.N. move to decriminalise homosexuality, and it makes him look as ignorant as Bush. Now that's fucking ignorant! If the Pope is that concerned about the environment maybe he should reexamine the church's position on birth control. Overpopulation isn't all of the problem (consumerism ranks up there) but it is certainly a major part. In terms of potential damage to the environment it seems we have more to fear from that family in Arkansas who just cranked out their 17th baby than the gays who go childless, limit themselves to one or two kids through artificial insemination and the like, or adopt.
