Getting Used to It Yet?

As whoever-it-was said on a previous thread, this isn't regular weather for Seattle, so a big reaction / disruption is kind of appropriate. But even so, "Will It Ever Stop?" followed by "Snowy weather could stick around through Christmas" is taking things a little far. Christmas is, like, 3 days away. I mean, c'mon.

Don't worry Seattle, climate change is a myth and Santa and Jesus will come and save us from this bad weather. To commemorate this astounding logic, find an evangelical and hit them right in the face with a ball of ice. MERRY CHRISTMAS

not as bad as yesterday's "START PRAYING"

Considering by 8pm last night I was wondering the exact same thing in a bit more graphic terms "when the fuck is the snow going to stop already?" I don't think it is too histronic. Look, I grew up in Colorado, snow is mostly "whatever" as far as I'm concerned, but this is getting to be a bit much, even for me.

Of course I could be more negative about it now since a HUGE tree branch crashed down smack dab in the middle of my front yard and scared the beejeesus out of me. I'm relieved it missed my brand new roof, but am now warily eyeing the rest of the very snowladen branches with extreme suspicion.

It will be so great when sound transit serves all the places those buses serve.

Agreed. Yesterday's "Start Praying" was much worse.

One of the climate models that we could expect in the next couple of decades are colder and wetter winters. (that was from Rich Marriott at King 5 several months ago while he was talking about climate change on the news)

I don't think it's histrionic at all. I am going crazy in this. I'm from a snowy climate, so I can deal in that sense, but the lack of infrastructure in place in Seattle to handle this is making me nuts. I can't work, and can't make money, and have to postpone or cancel my vacation because of this. I'm so, so annoyed by all of this. I'm just sitting here shaking in rage and impotence and cabin fever.

Big Sven, Kelly O, could you PLEASE let these Seattle folk know about midwestern winters? Being a near Yooper myself, Kelly, we have seen 5 feet of snowdrift followed by 2 weeks of 20 below zero temps. Seattle sounds like a breeze.

Dear smug jackasses from other, more frequently snowy parts of the country: You see what we meant now? How you likin' that commute?

Greg, there are NO smug jackasses in more-snowy parts of the country. We ship 'em all to Seattle.

Don't listen to Michiganders and Midwesterners when they talk about the snow there-- I've seen abandoned cars in Omaha and a car wrapped around a tree in SE Michigan.

Oh, and that suicide rate jumping? Yeah, that's so much better than Seattle shutting down for a few days.

Some Midwesterner should start a blog where they condescendingly boast about their superior snowstorm experience to all non-Midwesterners. It would be definitely the #1 most popular blog ever because of how interested everyone is in that topic.

I'm with Arrgghhh! I can't leave my neighborhood. The airport is running out of de-icer because it can't "get over the pass." My grocery store is running out of food.

Are we living in pioneer days?

Trevor @ 8 -- Speaking of Sound Transit, here's a headline that inexplicably escaped ECB's attention:

Police call for fans angry at train delay

Officers working the game called in backup from West Precinct.

"The crowd went just absolutely berserk," police spokeswoman Renee Witt said ...

#19 - THIS is the perfect moment for HOMEMADE soups and stews and massive baked, slow cooked crock pot dinners.

Beans, rice, pot roast, boiled or baked chicken ...

look in the freezer, on the shelves ...

Did I mention good home made chili, just made a giant batch - GREAT - shhhh... canned beans, lean ground beef from the freezer, three or four cans of tomato product, two onions, red pepper flakes from pizza boxes, more chili sauce from the dollar bottle - just wonderful looking at snow, bundled in a blanket, looking forward to more --- hot sex --- pray the electricity stays on ... that matters

@20: My boyfriend and I had a long conversation yesterday about which of our friends we would cannibalize first. We're either being morbid or making sure that we're prepared.

Open question: Would tattoos alter the taste/nutrition of flesh?

Scary thought: Will the failure of public transportation infrastructure and the ineffectiveness of small, gas efficient vehicles to get people to their destinations in these conditions cause a bump in the purchases of unnecessary monstrous SUV's in the Puget Sound?

"I can't trust nobody but myself" is not the best meme to spread.

PG,

Actually, the best cars I had in snow were my 1989 Ford Escort and my current 2002 Saturn. Front wheel drive and a light chassis (and of course a little practice in driving in rotten conditions) are the best course of action. Driving through Colorado on I-70 in snowstorms was always the best time to see SUVs in the ditch.

For the upcoming cannablization of Seattle: Stick with the children for meat. There is not much meat but it is young and tender. Also, they usually have not eaten as much processed food as older people so it should have a better flavor.

AND think of the money we will save on Public Education? Cannibalism: A solution for our day!

I lived in Minnesota for 4.5 years and yes, it gets way more snow but it's FLAT. And they have tons of plows and salt. You could comfortably drive after a foot of snow fell in a day. So you Midwesterners, shut the fuck up. Seattle is full of hills and we don't have the equipment for this because...gee, it never happens. Take your smug, flat-landed bullshit elsewhere.

Drove the Suburban in to work today as it's much better in the snow than my econo-box and we needed some stuff hauled that couldn't wait. I'm an OK snow driver, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have to - I nearly got totally bogged down just parking.

FYI, I wouldn't count on the 14. There was a bus stranded outside City Market late this a.m., and I'm assuming it was a 14 since the 43 isn't running at all.

I need to find a way to get to Central Library before the hold on materials I've requested expires. I only live on 3rd & Virginia but I am disabled so I can only walk a few blocks, and not on steep hills. Metro Rider Information is permanently busy. Does anyone know any buses that run on 5th, or know how to get from 3rd to 4th on Spring by taking elevators? Thanks!

I'm with #30. I lived in WI for 25 years, and snow there isn't a big deal because people are prepared for it and the terrain is mostly flat. If Seattle had the appropriate snow removal equipment to deal with this type of storm (which happens once in every... how many years?), everyone would bitch that we spend way too much money buying and maintaining snow removal equipment and training people to use it when we only need it every once in... uh... a few years.

Here's some perspective:

In January of 1880 Seattle got 6 FEET of snow in five days...

Local "fringe groups" blamed it on "climate change" caused by the "white man" angering the "great sky God".

Posted by Greg on December 22, 2008 at 1:18 PM

@44: Only on the Slog could we turn SNOW into an us vs. them situation.

Seattle(ites) handle(s) snow badly. No one made transplants come here -- people from the Midwest and Northeast chose to come here and choose to stay here. And finally, this situation is starting to suck.

All those things are true.

We transplants should quit bitching. The city should try harder, even if it's just communicating better about what's going on with roads and transit. And you natives should just accept that you don't know what to do with snowy roads and sidewalks because you don't see them that often.
