Snowpocalypse?

Posted by on Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Where is the fucking blizzard? I'm still waiting for it! It's not here. It's 9 pm. It's just snowing. Cliff Mass's Weather Blog is now feeling the pressure to explain the whereabouts of this wind of the year, the decade, maybe even the century:

There has been some "hot" comments about meteorologists hyping the weather....please be patient...it is too soon to throw in the towel on this event...although there are clearly deficiencies in the model's solutions. The winds have not accelerated as much as forecast...yet the pressure different across the mountains is extraordinary...nearly as high as I have ever seen it...nearly 16 millibars across the Cascades (Seattle-Yakima pressure difference).

Fine, I will hold on to the towel. But there better be some serious action by midnight.

It was interesting to me that while the local news was talking about 70+ mph winds, when I checked weather.com they were estimating winds of 10-15 MPH. I think they're hyping it *just* a bit to get people to tune in.

It's almost as if predicting the weather, and other future events, isn't 100% accurate. I want my money back.

Any storm that keeps us away from the bars is a SNOWPOCALYPSE!

Latest word is that the winds will hit us in a second front tomorrow in the morning or afternoon. So just wait - there's shitty weather to suit every taste.

Whenever you turn on the local news and the lead is the snow or the rain, you can turn off the TV and go to bed knowing that all is well in the world.

Get off your ass and go out and walk around in this lovely snow. Be glad it isn't blowing like a motherfucker.

Sweet jesus why do you want 'serious action'?

Here in Olympia, we're not getting much wind either, just snow. But our power has been flickering in and out for the hour or so. Internet may be lost!

Someone wake me up when Nate Silver starts blogging weather. Until then, phht.

Who cares about wind? Wind means I lose power and sit in my cold apartment. I'd rather have a fuckton of snow in a still night while I drink screwdrivers and watch hours of West Wing.

it's not a question of actually GETTING wind but getting the forecasters to answer for their overly hyped predictions of doom. i think i read today that this storm was sure to bring death. DEATH! that's a bit much to be putting as the headline of a site.

so if forecasters are going to insist on over-sensationalizing the weather then we should feel free to call them on it.

As recently as six hours ago the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE was predicting 70-90mph gusts. The heavy wind advisory just got canceled about an hour ago.

We have wacky weather. I don't fault the news orgs for trying to get people to take this seriously; all the experts said it was going to be a real blow.

And I ditto the comments about "serious action?!?" It's 28 fucking degrees out and losing my power, as I did for five days in 2006, would suck ass.

We're getting the wind up by Vancouver. I'll swap you for your snow, I'm quite cheesed at this 'blizzard'. I stayed in for this?

It's fucking windy and snowing out here in Highland Park (maybe not 90 mph winds, but nasty out). Roommate was planning to party on the Hill, bus wouldn't go across the bridge. It's stormy enough. Be glad you aren't homeless.

The 70-90 predictions were for gusts, not sustained wind, and it was for the foothills, not Seattle. The weather service has specifically been predicting the winds would be worst in the foothills (North Bend, etc.) and strong winds down to the east side of Lake Washington - Seattle was never supposed to get strong winds. And, exactly as they predicted, the foothills are getting their asses kicked, and here in Kirkland we've got some serious winds but nothing destructive. I got this info off of King 5's website; I'm no weather-phile. You just have to pay a little attention, and the truth shall set you free. Until then, panic! It's snowing and ice is attacking innocent drivers everywhere!

Vancouver is getting the snow. 10cm in an hour and a half downtown.

The Puget Sound area is known for its micro-climates. Blizzard conditions were only forecast for the mountains, foothills and south Sound/Kitsap.

Switzerblog is right. They weren't calling for high winds in Seattle. It was gusts in the foothills.

I prefer to read the weather report; it ends up less screamy.

it's a conspiracy Chuck. You tell 'em. Especially now that the streets are impassable and it's started to snow again. Get to the bottom of it and interview the worm!

This is what we have: antinomies of forecast. The snow is a Lacanian mirage of the hegemonic media simulacrum.

"Although there are clearly deficiencies in the model's solutions..", has just become my new catch phrase for being dead-ass wrong.

Try it on, it deflects blame quite nicely.

uhhh... I don't know where you 'aren't' getting the snow, but it is 7pm Sunday night and it is STILL snowing in Everett...
