Reading Tonight

In lieu of actual readings—since bookstores are in the business of selling books full-time right now and librarians are all drunk on egg nog and nobody is presenting actual readings, I am linking to short stories and poems online for you to read.

Because she is so polite to let me borrow the title "Constant Reader" for my column, today's story is "A Telephone Call," by Dorothy Parker. I wish I could have found "Big Blonde," but this whole everything-for-free-on-the-internet thing hasn't taken off all the way yet. Go read and enjoy.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

That poem is ageless. Painfully, realistically ageless.

I would find Dorothy Parker in general and "Big Blonde" specifically waaaaaay too depressing for this time of year!

I'm reading "The Toys of Princes" by Ghislain De Deisbach. Lot's of ice skating and winter disasters, kind of holiday-ish. It has a more cheerful cynicism.

What's the short story where it's the internal monologue of a woman dancing with a big galoot? That one cracks me up!
